So we are looking at a major redesign in January (if every MBP and powerbook has been redesigned in January, then this makes sense.)

MacWorld is in January, so it's possible. I expect the MacBook Pro to at least have a redesign with Penryn and maybe they should go back to Titanium with a better latch or have black anodized Aluminum with the new redesign.
