I am so lucky at this point in my life...I live a half mile from where I work.
(Although the monotony...of not leaving my 1mi. radius on most days does get old)

But, having worked an hour from where I lived for a year...the mileage on my car is finally catching up. :D

I'm in the "10 seconds" group. But don't be too jealous; as a writer I don't make much...

Also, what about people with commutes between 90 and 120 minutes?

90-120 min...now that would suck...my suggestion, buff up on new genres of music.

Burn yourself a few cds to listen to periodically...or maybe take out a few books on cd from the library...provides some sort of entertainment aside from spastic, weaving drivers that can't decide which lane they want to be in. :D

I actually am in the midst of considering moving to a much nicer place that would - not accounting for gas and the additional wear and tear on my car - save me hundred$ a month, but would make my commute 20+ miles both ways. This thread is reminding me how much I love living close to work.

I am shocked that the majority of people have less than 15 minutes commute! Good for the earth I suppose...

Yes, having a longer commute made all the difference on my car's performance. The tires wearing quicker is only the tip of the iceberg.

Granted, my experience is just that...my experience.

My timing belt and tensioner went out at 60,000 miles (It shouldn't have)
My transmission started lagging at take offs before 60,000 miles and making funny noises (At the time I didn't know what it was, and just wrote it off as random. ...an early symptom I would soon come to discover had to do with overdrive, which is inside the transmission...so a $30 part becomes astronomical to fix)
I later had to replace my transmission because overdrive quit on me while on the interstate, not allowing me to give it any gas...a danger to myself and other cars...Thank goodness my husband knew how to do that, he saved us hundreds of $$$.

All the problems aside...a car with higher miles, is a b*tch to sell. :D

Yeah, that in a nutshell is my dilemma. I live in a small place and have a simple, frugal lifestyle. I'm a student of "Affluenza," working hard to avoid becoming infected again after digging myself out of the hole I was once in. The place being nicer has more to do with it's condition and neighborhood than it's size and other extraneous (to me) details. And saving about 80% of my rent doesn't hurt, either.

Great article, though. Thanks for sharing it.

When I lived downtown it was a nice 10-minute walk, but now it's a 15-minute drive on average, which still isn't bad at all.

I feel sorry for people who have to spend hours commuting each day. I spend more time at work than I would prefer as it is, let alone spending time getting there and back! ;) I realize some people cannot help it, but regardless I always have to ask, "What's your personal time worth?" Less time on a bus, train or in a car means more time to do what I enjoy, spend time with my friends & family and all that good stuff. :)

i just recently moved, which meant giving up a < 1 mile commute. now it takes about half an hour to get to work, but i don't really mind. it's "me" time.

i'm hoping in the very near future to do my job remotely, but we'll see how that turns out. i'd love to walk to work...in my PJs.

It takes me 8 minutes to get to work and 12 minutes to get back home.

I cycle the two and a bit miles to work and it is predominately downhill on a morning.

If I take the car, it usually takes exactly the same time as going on my bike. :)

15 minutes if I leave on time at 5:45 am. After 6:30 it increases to about 20. Going home is another story. after 3 p.m. it turns from 20-30 to 40-50. I don't seem to care that much though.

Haha. Westwood is home to UCLA. Fight on is an expression from USC. Need I tell you that UCLA and USC hate each other?

Ring of fire, outside, 6 o clock. Be there.

Ah, I see.

I'll be there, tough-guy. I'll bring you some light beer so you don't ruin your figure. :D

/I have no connection to UCLA......
