I keep wondering just how much storage one actually "needs" that they can't just delegate over to an external HDD...

After moving all of my photos and source codes over to an external HDD, which "happily" gorged up 800GB of said drive, I have run my Mac with 30GB of free space for a long while. iTunes library included.

So which company will you go to in order to get dedicated graphics and a 500GB+ SSD in a 13" ultrabook for under $1500? If you find one let me know, I'll be ordering several.

you could get the samsung s3 or the lenovo s400, but the building quality on those are quite low, but they can hold a 2.5 drive, that would total it to around 1200 for a m500 960gb and the ultrabook itself

Well, goodbye Apple, I guess.

Check out Samsung Series 9 and Sony Vaio Z. They are PC Laptops in the 13' spectrum that are really high end. Nobody has as good build quality as Apple, but you might find you get what you're looking for.

Be warned, there is no Unibody laptops that is as flawless hardware wise. Either their battery sucks, they are flaky and made of some cheap plastic, or they have crappy screens/trackpads/keyboards, are heavy/large footprint, crappy sound.

They are expensive, but if you want a machine with no compromises. Well, then it will cost you. If you look at Macbook competitors, like Asus Zenbook or Samsung Series 9 you might find that their prices are not cheaper or that they can put that much more power or battery in them that Macbooks.

If OP wanted to have a cheap 15" plastic laptop with 1366x768 screen and 2.5" drive, why would he be initially eyeing a 13" rMBP? Specs don't even remotely compare.

Like I stated in my previous post, 13" rMBP price is competitive and OP's statement that you can find the same specs for half the price is simply not true. I'd even argue that value of most high-end Windows ultrabook is actually worse considering the specs.

Not sure why he's mad at Apple and considering switching while the reality is that the specs he desires are too high for his budget, no matter the brand.

OP get this:

SVS13A2APXS.png

3rd gen Intel® Core™ i7-3520M (2.90/3.60GHz)
Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
13.3" LED backlit display,
12GB RAM, 512GB (256GB x2) SSD,
Blu-ray Disc™ player,
NVIDIA® graphics (2GB) 640m LE,
fingerprint sensor,
TPM

It's 2400 dollars, but you get SSD in raid. The display is okay though.

samsung series 9 for 1700 dollars; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131367

you get 256 SSD for that and a good bright screen. it has a ULV processor so dont do anything too fancy.

Im not saying that the op should get it, I was pointing out that strein can get what he wants with reduced build quality. Its not going to be in the same line.

In my previous post you can see that the only competitor is the vaio z13, which is EOL, it actually went EOL when the rmbp arrived
