Just replaced my stock 120GB 5400rpm drive for the new Hitachi 7K320. Put the old HD into an enclosure, switched on the MBP holding 'alt' and then booted into Mac OSX from the external Firewire drive. It's been on the grey screen with timer thing for about 15mins and nothing seems to be happening.

How long should it take and have I done something wrong?

OK so the reason it wasn't booting into the firewire drive was because I hadn't partitioned the new drive in the computer (didn't realise you had to do it).

I restarted with an OSX install CD and booted into that, ran disk utility and partitioned the new drive. Then I restarted and booted into the firewire drive in no time at all.
