How long to make a boot disk?

I'm trying to make a USB boot for a clean install and it's taking forever. The terminal is stuck at "Copying installer files to disk..." for 20 minutes now.

Should I abandon this or is it normal?

Depends on the machine but I think my Early 2011 MBP here at work can take at least that long to create the stick. I never really timed it.

Depending on your machine and whether or not you have a stock HDD, 20 minutes (give or take) is not out of the question. Let it run longer and it should complete.
