I normally wait a few months before an OS upgrade to make sure the OS is stable. Not seeing a lot that excites me. What is your strategy on Monterey?

Don't wait, don't put it on your primary device. If you must then by all means wait or instal on an external drive.
This also depends on what device we are talking about here. Mac's with the T2 security chip have had some serious problems see; https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...el-macs-after-macos-monterey-install.2321944/

It's a bit of a "crap shoot" really so, have a recovery strategy in place and all your data backed up on either a clone or Time machine backup.

I upgraded the same day Monterey was released. It's great. Definitely snappier than Big Sur. Only problems I found was brighter screen settings and increased mouse sensitivity. (iMac Pro)

I just bought a 2020 iMac 2 weeks ago and had to upgrade the OS to Big Sur. Since then the new computer is acting up: Type while in Safari and there can be a delay of 10 seconds before what I typed shows up. Also page rendering on Safari occasionally doesn't happen for 40 seconds, even though I have 32 gb RAM and 70gb open storage and 900mb download on my internet. My mouse cursor flickers, no matter which of 3 mice I use (one wired and 2 wireless). I thought a brand new computer wouldnt be acting up like this

My 2017 didnt have these issues

That's strange. What mouse/keyboard are you using? Safari is smoother on Monterey so maybe upgrading helps.

I would say it depends on your hardware and what you expect:
New M1 seems OK
Old M1 seems NOK
New Intel (with T2) seems NOK
Old Intel seems OK
....

Personally MBP 2015, it is perfect and way better than Big Sur.
And just have another Mac, in case the first one is bricked seems overkill and should not be necessary.

I'm using Monterey and it is ok. The only thing I don't like is on an external screen when I wake up the mac it seems like it's incredibly zoomed in. It fixes itself, but this never happened with the last Mac OS.

I think I will wait till the next release then upgrade to Monterey. Anyone have an idea when that might happen?

Wait longer than that. Wait until its stable at .5--6-7 months from now.
