Based on my years of experience with Apple, I expect next years model will be much better. Until then don't expect changes. If Apple did that it would create two problems.

1) It would be admitting they shipped some bad phones & people would expect an exchange.

2) It would break with their tradition of keeping the appearance the same during the entire duration of a model cycle.

Flawless baby. (Black)

...after exchanging at the Apple store. ;)

My suggestion to anyone with a scratched phone:

Make an appt.
Show scratch.
Receive new one.

They have phones set aside especially for faulty launch phones.

my iphone 5 is flawless, sucks to be the bitter OP ;)
No need to be an ass, consider yourself lucky.

He has every reason to be bitter. :(

The first batch seem crap quality. How long do you think it will take for them to find & fix the problem to begin shipping none damaged iphones? I'm really put off buying one after seeing these photos of damage iphones out of the box plus the anodized aluminum seems bad choice for a phone, the colour just chips away easily.

I'll start a thread full of pics of perfectly fine iPhones. Maybe you'll feel better then. Oh wait, people that don't have something to bitch about don't get on this form.

Add me to the list of perfect.

This happens every year with every release. I recall when people were returning 3G models becuase the glass wasn't perfectly flush all the way around.

Nice try, but there's no credibility here. People that get good ones are always cocky. Happens all the time.

I think that the point Surely was trying to make is that you can't gauge how widespread the deffect problem is by the number posts on the forum, since someone who has a problem with the thier iPhone is far more likely to post about it then someone who doesn't have any issues. I don't think anyone is trying to say the problem doesn't exist, or that it shouldn't be taken seriously, but to Surley's point your chances of not getting a deffective phone are probably better than your chances of getting a bad one.

So wait.....you are saying it should be normal to buy a phone at one store and then have to take it to a different store to get one that is good? And I know this might be hard to understand but there is not an Apple store on every corner.

This exactly!
Bought my iPhone 5 at a SoftBank store 5 mins from my house. The wifi is no good so now I have to drive an hour to my closest Apple store to exchange it.
This sucks.

The backplate on the bottom of mine is a tinsy bit raised. Not enough to see it, but if you run your finger along the bottom you can feel a ridge, whereas you can't on the top.

Are your phones perfectly flush on both sides, or am I expecting too much?

It's apparent you prefer to think negatively.

People are merely reporting their experiences. Oh sure there's bound to be some complainers, after all this _Is Apple_ we're talking about.

Have you heard of them? They're the company generally known as an industry leader in the making of high quality products.

Therefore when their quality falters, people report it.

Is as simple as that :)

Closest true Apple store to me is 6 hours away. There are a couple stores that sell a bunch of apple stuff but they aren't corp stores but even the closest one of those is 3 hours away.

They have been shipping out excellent quality phones...Our new Iphone 5 was flawless....

Really? I've had an iPhone 5 since Friday and this is the first time I have mentioned on these forums that mine was perfect. Yet, anyone with problems seems to post in about 3-4 threads about the horrors they experienced (first they start their own thread, then they go find any other thread that seems like it was the same issue and posts a link to their thread or reposts that they originally posted in their thread).

No, traditionally the internet is a place we come to complain. It isn't a place we go to state "just letting you know everything is fine" unless these sorts of threads pop up. Yes there are people who are cocky about having a great working X, but I can guarantee that the majority of us just keep our perfectly working devices to ourselves.
