it's not obsolete as long as it does what you want it to do. if you don't need any of the functions of the newer ones what's the difference? that's a sweet model and i'd be happy to get that:)
 
If I were you I'd say "thanks mom!" she is GIVING you an awesome gift, take it with a smile. If you are scared about it being outdated then put it in craigslist for $500 (you'll sell it in no time and won't hold onto it for months waiting to get more money out of it.) and then buy an entry level iPad 2.

Is the ORIGINAL iPhone obsolete? I have one - and use it every single day. As long as it does what you want it to do - it will never be obsolete.

But many people here keep mentioning hi quality gaming. If you are only looking into having the fastest gaming iPad around - then upgrade when version 2 comes out.
