Remember, A8 in HomePods main function is some sort of room correction and Siri. That’s it. HomePods don’t have much else capability to need a stronger processor.

I know...the A8 probably performs sufficienty well for the expected use of the home pod, but still. 🙂

It’s Dual core in A9 vs Hexa core in A10X. Apple quotes 30-40% increase in CPU speed.

Well, although it is 6 cores, we need to remember the A10 (which was quad core) was not a heterogenous design...only 2 cores were active at any given moment (for efficiency)

So if its the same as the A10 architecture (which it 99.9% likely is), then the A10X will also not be heterogenous

And this means only 3 cores will be active at one moment

Plus the low power cores, if they're the same as A10, are 1/5 in power envelope and supply primarily background tasks - negligible when comparing the A9 cores to A10's big cores

But apple does not mention if that is the speed of a single core, or of a single processor.

We don't have clock speeds yet (afaik) but they probably added an extra Hurricane core + small core

So it is probably the entire processor, because one core won't give those gains as Hurricane is more or less a modified Twister at a higher clock speed (same fab process too)

Recent Geekbench 4 on A10x shows that it is a freaking MONSTER! 3 CORES active at any one time.

Apple, as typical, underates their achievement! 30% improvement is for single core. Multi-core score is MUCH HIGHER than expected.

Kinda makes me wonder what A11 will be like...damn!

If you’re Qualcomm exec, then you’re probably pissing in your pants right now...well, probably they’ve been pissing in pants since 2013...so, probably crap in their pants is more appropriate.

Now what is shameful is Apple TV having A8!!

Yeah those are mighty impressive scores...that is a beast of a chip...so this would confirm that the big.LITTLE is not heterogenous (which makes sense)

Multicore will be more important for iPad with iOS 11's improved iPad multitasking and rendering applications that are more suited to iPad than iPhone

Otherwise, that single core score itself is very impressive and is way more than enough power for anything in 2017...never mind that multi core score :O thats is quite incredible!

And just to prevent this from going off topic too much:
@OP, the single core scores from the A9 are more than enough power as well for any app - so again, it should last for quite some time in terms of the number of software updates it receives...or, if Apple only supports it for 5 more updates based on iPhone 4s and 5 history, then it should perform admirably on it's final iteration of iOS based on how powerful the A9 is, and how computers much weaker than it are running the latest macOS and especially Windows 10 fine (unless iOS radically changes in terms of processing demands but we cannot predict that, and I doubt it will leapfrog macOS in that department)

So don't be surprised if it outlasts every prior iPhone, or if the quality of support it receives leaves you with less slowdown than the iPhone 4S and 5 received during their iOS support lifespan

Just for fun:

A10 in iPhone 7 was around 170,000-180,000. This thing is 234,000.

The iPhone 6S should last for years as there is still little that causes the A9 to break a sweat. Instead, I think Apple will drop support by denying features to the 6S can force people to upgrade that way. Already, it doesn't look like HEVC/HEIF will be supported by the 6S. At a time when iPhone sales are starting to dip, the last thing Apple wants is iPhones that perform well for 4-5 years.

My iPhone 5s works well on iOS 11, Apple must have made some mistake then.😀 I don't care if hevc is unsupported in the 6s. Planned obsolescence all the way. /s

I have an iPhone 6S since it came out. How much longer will it last?

I actually do plan on upgrading to the 7 or the one that comes after the 7 Bc I need the best camera for selfies but I was just curious.
I still have an iPhone 5s, so I think you are good for another 2-3 years at least

My 6+ still runs like a top. Just take care of it. Also, the 7 is a MINOR MINOR MINOR upgrade from the 6s. Save your $$ and get the 8 or whatever it'll be called this fall.

I have 6 plus and it didnt bend yet. Sw wise its good still.

Well, iPhone 6S on iOS 11 is just like running an iOS 7 on an iPhone 4S. It is already slow, but not much.
Which means that, It might get 1 or 2 more years or possible iOS 13 it's LAST update. Considering How slow it is on iOS 11 already...

For summarization
iPhone 6 can get iOS 12, but even slower performance.
iPhone 6S iOS 13 is LAST update, terrible performance as it lacks HEVC encoding.
iPhone 7 has long way to go can still live up to 2021 which means iOS 14 will be it's last update. It has some major software features that isn't present in iPhone 6/6S.
