The hard drive isn't all that hard to replace there are plenty of instructions on the internet.

Its such a shame people actually look to the Apple Forums for advice, they seem to be just one-way rant-boards with no discussion.

Without meaning to sound really rude it sounds like you are pretty set on not buying an iMac, every commenter on this thread has tried to reassure and i'd imagine most (if not all) of us actually own one of the things. I'm not sure what you expected us to say to change your mind? If it bothers you that much just go for the Mini they're still great little machines, if not quite as good value for money

Sorry I thought the hard drives in the 2011 iMac had a proprietary connections?

I honestly haven't made my mind up one way or the other and you aren't being rude I know I'm being incredibly indecisive :)

oh yeah the proprietary connections, i see your point. May be worth looking into that with more depth before making your purchase then if hard drive replacement is going to be a deal breaker for you. If theres an easy workaround i'd still recommend the iMac, in terms of bang-for-buck value for money its just a better choice than the Mini.

My iMac is perfect, no screen issues, or noise issues. I too read the forums here, and nearly didn't pull the trigger, expecting bad pixels, yellow bands, and noise like a small aircraft from the HDD.

None of those things came to pass. I expect that for the overwhelming majority of iMacs there aren't any screen or noise issues.

As far as repairs to older iMacs, you'll probably take it into an Apple service center anyway, right? I mean the iMac is not something you want to mess around with and scratch up the screen, etc... Once you factor in your own time, it's probably not that much more to have Apple service a bad drive. (in your hypothetical, future, out-of-warranty failure case.)

Unless you plan on running the computer as a "headless" server in a closet, the Mac mini option actually ends up costing more once you get the same quality screen as the iMac. And even then, the processor and video card don't match what you get with the iMac.

The iMac is the no-brainer decision here. Don't over think this. ;)

Went in an apple store today.

Look at 2 display iMacs ...

1 had a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen and both had yellow tint.

:(

Jeez you live in a nightmare world of messed up iMacs. Tell you what, I think that you should get a MacBook, seriously. No one needs this much stress in their life.

As for me, I'm unsubscribing to this thread. It's putting a damper on my 24/7 iMac love fest, and life is too short.

Good luck with it!!

You're still going on about this? For real, make a decision already and stick to it. If you keep debating and fearing the worst, you'll never get anything.

S*#@ or get off the pot man!

maybe my ears are too sensitive but i wouldn't say it's silent at all under full load, granted it's not like a rackable server but it's still very noticeable, either that or my room/office is too silent so it's easy for me to hear it.

Dude, if you are so convinced every iMac out there is a duffer just buy something else! and try not worry so much about it!

I'm unsubscribing too, as i'm not sure what me or anyone else can say to help you further. Good Luck! :)

I have no agenda, I'm not stressing and I'm not convinced every iMac is a 'duffer'.

I'm just saying what I saw when I went to look in store...

If you're in the US take advantage of the 14-day return thing and keep trying till you get one without display issues :), might get lucky and get it one first try, remember only ppl with problems post online, we really have no idea how big an issue it is. although i asked my reseller (not in the US) if they changed many displays and he said quite a few, i still wonder how big a % it is in a market this small XD
