I don't think I have ever even heard my 24" iMc make a noise. Does this thing even have fans????

They are very quite, can only hear mine in the dead of night when there is no noise in my house. Unless I'm ripping a DVD or something like that, then you can hear it. But it won't be nearly as loud as a powermac G5.

Don

its really quiet. you won't really notice it, especially if you're used to any other desktop.

Glad to hear all of this as i'm just about to buy the 3.06 and it would be nice to have my first silent computer.

Question though, what's it like in comparison to the MacBook? i get annoyed when i move on the trackpad as it makes a different sound! Although i sleep with a very loud room fan on to drown out my PC's fans!

Yeah, it's great that the iMac is soo quiet, since you can leave it on overnight then. My old pc had so many fans that it sounded like a vacuum cleaner! :D

huh???

Yeah when i move the mouse arrow via the trackpad the processor makes a different buzz. Pretty odd!

Maybe neiltc13 is more sensitive to noise when sleeping or his/her iMac is very close to the bed. But I can also confirm that the iMacs are very calm, really calm.

They are most definitely not "silent" though.

Which iMac do you have?

I have the 3.06 GHz and can comfortably say that it is silent.

On the other hand, I may not hear it because it is such a dramatic difference from the loud noise of my old iMac G5.

It is certainly the most quiet of all of Apple's computers.

I have the 20" 2.4GHz model from 2007.

silent (adj.)
Free from sound or noise; absolutely still; perfectly quiet.

While it is not loud, it definitely is does not fit the definition of "silent".
