there is definitely a constant, but peaceful hum from the fans, and the occasional HD noise.

I'm quite picky about my mac pro being silent (used to have the noisy ati fan issue), but I honestly think that there is no way it can be totally silent as in you hear nothing in a dead silent room except for the drop of a pin.

someone mentioned before that the mac pro has moving parts thus, there will be some noise. It sounds fair to me.

Ok, so I moved the Mac HD from bay 1 and placed it in bay 4 tonight, no issues on boot, it's running fine right now. The noise level has been reduced, though definitely not eliminated. By having the noisy drive in the back of the case, it at least muffles it a little bit. It's an easy measure to take if anyone else is having the same issue. I'm also going to ordered a new drive from Newegg tonight, they're having a good deal on a 500GB and I've been impressed with how quiet my other drives are. It's the drive that shipped with the machine that is causing the hum.

Mine is next to silent. The only sounds that I really hear is the RAM ticking, and the peaceful hum of fans.

Why is your fan speed up that high? xD

Mac Pro ≠ Icebox

if i know why, i would have done some thing
these days i'm fighting with a monster  not a mac pro, tomorrow i'm going to apple store to let them fix it for me :(

So, last week my Mac Pro with an ATI 2600 started running really, really loudly. And it's definitely the video card. Just pop the side and stop the fan with your finger. I took it out and cleaned the fan and all the air ducts and it's still super loud.

I'll be calling AppleCare later on today to see what they can do about this. It's exceedingly annoying.

UPDATE: They're shipping a replacement video card and (just in case) logic board and a tech will be out to replace whatever hardware is needed.

UPDATE: Video card replaced & sanity restored.
