To answer another poster, I'd buy a Mac screensaver. I like having something on my screen when I step away for ten minutes or so. (I don't have my display go to sleep until I've been away a half hour or so.)

I do think the sentence is both incorrect and slightly condescending. And in fact I think the Mac numbers might be a little higher than even kwood mentions. I've heard several times that since Mac users tend to hold onto their computers longer, that the installed base of Macs might be as high as 10-13%.

Screen... Saver?

I'm more offended that these people think we should keep our displays powered up displaying a rendered image, which in turn uses up more power than simply having a display going to sleep. I have all my displays set to power down after 3 minutes. I'm either working on them 100% or not at all.

The only computers I see with screen savers are the display units at Supermarkets or retailers.

I do not know of any individual who actively uses a screensaver for his personal computer. Just, set the display to sleep?

I don't see how this can be offensive, it's just a statistical fact --if you find that offensive you probably need to get a life.

I'm outraged!

LOL, if anyone is truly "offended" by this, they have serious issues.
It's a little misinformed, but nothing more. And someone else has probably already posted this, but they are missing out on some sales by limiting their product to Windows.

They don't have flying toasters, so why do they matter?

I actually have a version of the flying toasters on my Mini right now. I love seeing 22" worth of flying toasters. :)

Sadly, I don't remember where I found it. It was open source and I loved the original, so I grabbed it.

BTW: Lots of businesses still use screen savers. Many enterprises require users to lock systems when stepping away from the machine. Of course, they aren't really used to save the screen anymore, but they do get used. A lot of people also use them to show off photos and other images.

A potential solution

One thing you can do is to offer to fund porting the software over to the Mac platform. When you understand the costs involved and the length of time for the payback (if at all), you'll understand their hesitance to develop for the Mac.

Correct re corporate usage and quite often the screensaver is locked to a specific image (corporate logo etc) and linked in our case to the pc locking at 15 mins of incactivity.

Certainly not offensive, at least not to anyone with an epidermal layer of sufficient depth.

Vote with your wallet, it's a free world. No need to go looking for panties to be bunched up.

Since Mac users are more around 20% not 3% as that link says, and Mac users have more disposable income as they choose to buy more expensive computers, and have actually downloaded over 1 Billion App store Apps, i'd say that company is throwing away a bigger market than the PC market.

Johnny Castaway????? we used to take that screensaver into school and put it on the iCL 386's running WFW 3.11

Ding Ding Ding! You've won the Bonus Round! Tell us what he's won, Roddy... :D

Some of us used it at our workplace "back in the day" (mid '90s). We'd keep hoping to see something new happen to poor Johnny.

It's sad they use out of date information. Still, it's understandable that they don't want to develop software for 8 of 100 computer users. But you know what? There are companies willing to develop software for us.
Guess who gets my money? ;)

I'll bet they use Microsoft's DirectX as their API instead of OpenGL. If they actually used an open standard API, they could much more easily port any 3D screensavers to the Mac, and to Linux as well.

This thread is hilarious, I've never heard of someone getting irritated by a matter-of-fact article like that before!

I'm a mac user but some of these mac fanboys never cease to amaze me..

It's blatantly trying to show how minimal Mac is in the market. However, when you figure how many computer users 3% is, that's a lot of people.
