Thanks for posting this thread. Like you I have a new MBA (2013) and it is still under the original warranty and I'm trying decide on apple care.

I bought Applecare for my old 2009 MBP and never needed it. BUT I've already had to send my MBA in for repair (for bright spots occurring on the screen which seems like a common problem). So I'll probably get Applecare for this machine just because it has been a bit more problematic from a hardware standpoint than my previous MBP. If I hadn't had any problems thus far I might have skipped it.

I would never buy Applecare upfront though. You could have an accident and break your machine within the first year and Applecare would then be worthless (I think?) so I always wait until my standard warranty is about to expire.

I didn't get it for my 2008 MBP, didn't get it for my 2011 MBA and didn't get it for my 2013 MBA. I have gotten it in the past, but the only time I ever used it was my aluminum Powerbook G4 which needed a motherboard swap because of memory issues.

Today, I just don't buy extended warranties for anything that I own and have not regretted it.

I never had Apple care. I sell my computers and buy the new ones when they come out, so i don't need AC.

I've been a Macintosh user since 1985, and have never bought AppleCare. And, in all that time, I've newer needed it.

However, When I buy my computers, I use a Credit Card that extends the manufacturer's warranty by one year. But, again, I've never had to use that either.

In my opinion it also has to be considered that the newer MacBooks all have less user repairable internals than the older MacBook pros. If the ram fails on you, you cannot just swap it out. Same with the ssd.

I have nothing to state this but I think repairs are more expensive on the newer models because of this. Can somebody confirm this?

Same with the ssd.

SSDs are replaceable on models up to and including the 2012 MBAs. However, I know that 2 aftermarket company's (OWC and Transcend) are working to bring out large capacity SSDs for the newer MBAs.

I made the MBA purchase on AMEX. The warranty is extended one year that way. If I get two years without a major issue, I'm good. My experience with Macs is that they are quality units that perform well as long as we treat the well.

I have AC for my first Apple notebook. The only issue was the letters wore off the keyboard. AC sent the part but said Apple retail would not install. User must install. I confirmed with Apple retail so the new part is still in the box.

Support is readily available so I don't see AC as a value for me.
