I got a weird itch and decided to grab the $1499-spec M1 iMac (Costco sale PM'd to Best Buy and some gift cards) for $899.

I do kind of need it to be a Plex server for an aging Mac mini, but I would like to use that sweet sweet display as a secondary monitor for my Apple Studio + XDR setup. Although the iMac hasn't arrived, I did some experimenting, and found AirPlay as an Extended Monitor to work decent. Although I did have trouble with the audio sometimes getting 'stuck' on the secondary Mac.

Any tips or best practices?

You can also use universal control (or a standalone app like Teleport or Synergy) to share one keyboard and mouse with the iMac as a secondary computer. Sometimes that's helpful, but it can also be annoying since you can't drag windows back and forth.

Edit: I run an XDR (primary) using my M1 iMac (secondary). I wish I could run a 3rd screen, but the M1 iMac screen is really fantastic.

If it was me I'd spend just slightly more money and get the Apple Studio Display.
I already have one, but it’s primarily for my work Mac. The smaller size of the 23.5” is actually a good complement to the XDR.

Also, since I got the iMac for $899, a Studio Display is almost 2X. And I really want that included Touch ID keyboard! :)
