But God help you if you get locked out of your iCloud account and lose access to everything. This is why I'm using a third-party password manager.

You don’t lose access to your passwords in the situation you describe. They are available on each device.

There are absolutely tons of ways to get locked out of your iCloud account.

Well, there are a few ways, at least :)

I picked a memorable three word passphrase for mine and while I can remember the words and numbers I can never remember their order.

I think it’s pretty silly to feel like you hate Apple/iPhone because you forgot something that is your responsibility to create and remember (not directed to the OP).

The technician definitely was being a little snobby with the “everyone remembers”, so fair to that. But if you have iPhone/iCloud and you know its importance for protecting your data then you should remember it. Or work on remembering it. It’s right behind your bank details imho, unless you just don’t care about recovery/photos/messages, etc.

I had to spend HOURS in an Apple Store doing a complete iPhone reset because I could not remember my password.

Was really, really, really annoying.

Definitely never buying an iPhone in person again.

Even if you get it shipped to your house you’ll need your password to get all your personal stuff on the new phone. You are annoyed at yourself.

Have you used Stolen Device Protection? Seems you haven't. Once you enable it you cannot unlock the passwords app with your passcode.
Yeah, I edited my post after discovering they fixed that.

And yet still, I prefer to keep my passwords in a separate system from Apple. Too many eggs in that one particular basket already. And again, the mass "thousands of people getting suddenly and simultaneously locked out of iCloud passwords for no reason Apple ever disclosed" I referred to before did not inspire confidence.

One of the reasons I still use a third party password manager and not use a “me” email.
What is one of the reasons? I’m failing to see how you arrive at this from the original post (if that’s what you’re referring to).

Have you used Stolen Device Protection? Seems you haven't. Once you enable it you cannot unlock the passwords app with your passcode. It then shows an error message saying: Face ID is required because Stolen Device Protection is turned. There is no option to skip Face ID anymore which is the whole point of Stolen Device Protection.

And it's your choice if you want this to be enabled only when on the go or everywhere including at home, you can find that in the Face ID settings under Stolen Device Protection. I set it only to enable away from home because if your Face ID hardware fails you would then get locked out completely with absolutely no way to restore access. The only option left would then be to reset the iPhone thus deleting all data stored on it and restoring from a backup if you have one. That is why I recommend to set it to only require Face ID away from home.

I have stolen device protection turned on, but I'm still not storing my Google or Apple password anywhere on my phone. They stay on my computer in KeePassXC, offline, and not synced anywhere. I can recover pretty much anything else, but if anyone gets those accounts, I'm toast.

Apple really, really, really, needs to allow for a separate and specific passcode for the Passwords app. I use it because it's handy and free, but I don't consider it all that secure.

That is bad. Only Mic! Jackson is Badest! Joke apart, the badest is to forgot the iPhones sim pin, and not to have the printed pin code, result iphone briked.

but don't most people have the passwords written down somewhere at home? :)

in my case, it's written down on page 278 of my favorite book. (actually, it's the first characters of the first 10 words plus the page number in reverse) Of course, there's no chance of me actually remembering it because I still have not finished that book past page 278 since I started reading it 38 years ago. The book has over 1200 pages, depending on version.

Is it "It"...?

Just got me thinking to right them all down so my wife can access it all in case of my demise!

I have all our kids videos etc locked to iCloud

Plus iTunes purchases

When I decide to use iCloud Keychain as my major password manager, I realised that iCloud account password becomes the Master Password for all other credentials. And so, it should be more complex and easy to remember at the same time.

how many people actually know their iCloud password by heart in case the iPhone asks for it?

I've had two battery changes for two iPhones at two different Apple Store recently. They asked me to enter my iCloud password to unlock it before the battery change... not sure why that's even necessary, but I think they always ask for it anyway.

I took my spare phone out to look up my iCloud password. The Genus said something like "oh, how can you not remember it? anybody who uses iPhones ALWAYS know it by heart!" :) I thought "oh great, so I'm the only person in the world who doesn't remember it?" :)

Anyway, I got it from my other phone and entered it on the iPhone that was about to get a battery replacement. I just kept wondering if how many people actually know their iCloud password by heart in case the iPhone asks for it? Maybe I'm finally an old geezer who needs memory booster pills... or perhaps have the password tattooed to somewhere on my body, just in case?
I can remember my Apple Account password, but not 1Password password. too long
