I am in the market for a new laptop and coming from an 11" 2011 MBA this should be a big improvement. However, when shopping around I can't help notice the awesome screen real estate of the 27" iMac. I don't have use for a machine like it and I need a portable option. Also, just in general these new curved monitors that are coming out that are also almost bezel-less just look great.

I enjoy my 11" 2011 MBA now, but figured it is time to upgrade. I love the footprint but the screen real estate can be difficult at times. I was wondering what you are all rocking for an external monitor and if the rMB is capable of driving an ultra wide screen?

This would be great for me as it would serve as my all in one and then could be made portable when needed. If i go this route I would also get an external trackpad and keyboard to accompany this set up. Anyone else in a similar boat?

Thanks for the replies

I have a 34inch Dell curved display that I use with mine along with an Apple keyboard and trackpad. Works great. I have the slim profile of the Macbook when I travel and all the screen real-estate under the sun when at home.

I connect to a 27" inch ASUS in my office. Also use the Apple keyboard and trackpad. Otherwise, I carry the rMB with me everywhere, and a quick connect via the USB-C HDMI is easier than a dock I think.

I just ordered the LG 27UD88-W which has USB C port for true one cable hookup/power for my 2015 rMB. I can also hook it up to my work issue Thinkpad. I'll do the patch to get 4K@60Hz over USB C. I considered the 34" curved monitors but they're better for gaming and video editing since the 3440 x 1440 resolution only works out to about 110dpi. I don't do either of those things so I opted for the higher resolution of 4K. It would be hard to go back to blurry text now that I have the 12" Macbook.

I got the same monitor. I applied the patch however after an OS X update 60HZ was gone. I tried to do apply the match again and didn't work. :/

Thanks for the replies. So, this patch now doesn't work? Why would apple prevent this?

The same happened to mine after an update.. I think I had to do an option click in the display menu to set it back to the 60hz refresh rate. In my case, the 60Hz option was still there, but for some reason it defaulted back to 30. Also make sure you turn off system integrity protection before (re)applying the patch (and back on after).

It's been hypothesized that Apple doesn't officially support 60Hz for this model (even though the hardware does), because the bandwidth it uses running in that res at 60Hz limits remaining connected USB devices to a USB 2.0. speed. I haven't confirmed from the System Report, but I'll check tomorrow at work.

I have a 2015 and worked initially. I tried press OPTION and I see the display resolution options but Refresh Rate still greed out to 30Hz. Will try again.. and update.

UPDATE: Applied the patch. It works! make sure you leave a space when you type 'CHMOD +X ' before dragging the file to terminal. That was my mistake.

Earlier this year I got a 13 inches rMBP. I was rocking it solo until a few days ago. Last month I worked in a long manuscript and used an extra monitor that was laying around at one of my jobs. The extra space was so "liberating" that finally this week I got a 22 inches LG external monitor for my setup at home. I'm rocking it with a logitech solar powered BT keyboard, and a previous generation mighty mouse.

It is the best of both worlds, the mobility of a laptop, the extra screen real state of a desktop.
