On. I think Apple may have put that setting there so that they can prove to the users how useful it actually is. Plus, I dont like typing apostrophies all the time and it helps for when I spell a word wrong. It makes me smarter than I really am. Also saves me from having to type shift-I all the time.

I turned it off, like I turned off all similar options in all mobile phones I ever had. Nothing more annoying like a machine telling you "Did you mean that? Or that? Maybe that? This one? How about that?".

The disable option is poorly implemented.

One of the reason why anyone would want to disable auto correction is to write in a language for which there is no auto correct dictionary. But then if you disable, you also disable it for english, or spanish or whatever.

this "take it or leave it" approach is not acceptable. They should have enabled a keyboard language layout that doesn`t have auto correction enable, and that way you can cycle through all keyboard layouts tapping on the globe icon (for those who don`t know what i`m talking about, if you enable spanish and english keyboards, for example, you get an additional globe button whenever the keyboard is showing. this key is right next to the space bar.

apple should introduce an option so you can "tap -> english.. tap again -> spanish ... tap once again -> ABC auto correct disabled"

Apple needs to realise people DO write in other languages. For example I write in Spanish and English, which are both supported, but I also write in Catalan (one of the official languages in Catalonia, Spain, together with Spanish) and also hebrew (with latin alphabet of course.. Apple doesn`t deem necessary to allow text to be entered in arabic or hebrew scripts but it doesn`t matter because with auto correct enabled, writing hebrew is a pain, and with it disabled, writing in spanish or english is unbearable....)

disabled.

i don't understand why it won't correct the letter 'j' by itself. when i type an 'o' on its own, it turns into an 'i'. i don't see how the iphone could possibly think 'j' is an actual word.

Off! It always hinders my typing and sometimes I don't notice the auto-correction and my text message looks crazy. I'm typing 10x faster without it, haha.

I'm one of those w/ small fingers and I can hit each key correctly more often than not, so all auto-correct did for me is change "f***" to "duck" and other dumb things like that.

I would say the consensus of this thread is pretty clear:

If you use the English keyboard to type in another language, yay, you can now turn it off!

Otherwise, it is more helpful than annoying. :)

I left mine on, but it has caused some embarassment in the past. I hate when it changes sec to sex. Oh well, it's certainly helped more than it has hurt.

the consensus is that you type in any non-supported language, then turn it off. But then you can't use it with supported languages. Either one or the other, or switch between both going through 4 level deep menus. Yay.. Apple knows how to make it easy (LOL)

good god, no. I probably type twice as fast as I would without it. Auto-correct on the iphone is so good I can't believe it sometimes. You can miss half the letters in a word and it will still know what you meant.

+1

I came from Motorola's iTAP and iPhone's auto correct is one million times better. :)

OFF :D

I must have unusually sensitive fingers, but i never found auto correct to help me with my typing, it would just get in the way when typing things

I can finally go back to sending sms messages in zomg 133t speak

oh and I can finally type YO YO YO YO YO !

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; nl-nl) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I also let it on. I can type much faster with auto-correct on. But I agree that it's not always the right word that I need.

you guys who type in multiple languages realize you can add international keyboards and it will auto-correct in whatever language keyboard you're in.......right?

I still have it on. Accessing foreign characters is a pain without it. I used to have US jailbroken phone without my language though. Then I had auto correction off :)

Now I just wish for the ability to edit the dictionary. That would make it much more easier to type just by editing a bunch of words.

mines still on :)

i would be lost without it. i just type as fast as i can, and it's pretty much always right. the only thing that annoys me is when it changes 'lol' to 'LOL' and i accidently press send :D ahha

loves it :apple:
