I do on consoles where I can be sure that they support Dolby Digital/DTS. I have no clue how it would work in OS X.

At the very least OS X DVD Player supports 5.1 output through the built in optical out in Macs for DVD playback and has since at least !0.4 which is when I started using 5.1 speakers with my Macs.

I do via Windows on my Mac Pro. I bought a soundcard for it. It has DD encoder so I can pass 5.1 via optic cable.

(This is for osx)

1. You buy an external usb sound card that supports 5.1 and osx.
2. Get a 5.1 sound system (duh)
3. Attach and go to system pref/sound, set output for the usb device.
4. Go to applications/utilities/audio midi setup, go to your device, where it says 2ch-24 bit integer, set it for 6 ch (or so). Go to configure speakers, test them, make sure they work.

Games and movies must support 5.1... A lot of steam games do though.

It's probably best to get 5.1 for bootcamp though.

Which OSX titles have you played that you've confirmed are in 5.1?

Used to play with 5.1 on my ol' 2008 Mac Pro, running Windows.
Got a PCIe Sound Blaster X-fi card for it and attached via the three analog outputs (classic style).

Nowadays the Radeon 7950 Mac Edition which is in there supports HDMI audio which supports 5.1 sound (not sure how many games support this though).

Too bad OS X cannot enable HDMI audio using this card.

I am interested fo find out which games support 5.1 sounds on OS X and which external sound card do you use?

FYI, the minijack port on all Macs (I believe) are optical out ports. I use it for VLC with movies that have 5.1 encoding.

When I go on osx next (On bootcamp), I'll make a list of all games with 5.1. I have over 1000 steam games, so I can make a good list.
