Other than Sketch what apps are you each running and what are your respective machines’ configurations? Happy my base model is still chugging along, but it struggles with heavily layered construction documents I work on. Hoping to upgrade to a setup as reliable as this one has been soon, but certainly not in base model territory anymore.

Mine is pretty much base configuration, so base CPU, base memory and a 256GB disk.

As for software, you mean concurrently with Sketch? It doesn’t make a difference actually, Sketch on its own is very power hungry since its snapping and nesting/instancing algorithms are pretty sophisticated.
As for other software in general, I’m also using rarely InVision Studio, which is an inperformant mess (basically unusable). Affinity Designer runs well for the most part, its an incredible Software for pure Graphics Design. Figma is basically on par with Sketch, so the same goes for complex projects. And then I also use Final Cut now and then, which is also fine for small projects in 1080p, but gets a pain in the ass above it. Finally there’s Davinci Resolve, which basically makes my Macbook die and is no fun on a 13“ screen anyways.

I think that’s pretty much it. Want to go more into After Effects and Animation Software like Principle, but this stuff wont work well on my machine either.

2011 here. If not for the butterfly keyboard, this would have been replaced already. Still not sure if I want to spend good money for a third version of the butterfly keyboard. Also not sure if a replacement keyboard will surface when predicted nor how long it will take before the quality of that new keyboard is proven out.
If not mistaken, security updates will stop just over a year from now...

Mine would be in beach ball heaven if I tried to run that stuff right now. Not a big deal, but we have the same computer (except for your additional SSD space). I chalked it up to the age of the computer and lack of RAM. If I have Mail, Safari, Slack, PDF Expert or Notability and Bluebeam open it’s pretty much crippled at this point so I’m living on my iPad Pro 12.9 2018 for work (I’ve actually gotten pretty good at making the most of iOS).

Just curious how other’s are faring and with what configuration and apps running. Thanks!

I have a 2012 15” rMBP w/8gb RAM and while it’s been a great laptop I feel like it might be time to retire it.

I’m very close to pulling the trigger on a 13” MBP (1.4ghz w/ 16GB) but I’m a bit torn between that and waiting it out a bit longer.

Mine is i7, 8GB, 512GB. I don't do anything onerous and could have purchased the Air back in 2013 but it was certainly the Retina screen that made my decision. I know the older version of the Air is a very highly regarded laptop but I just can't see how someone could accept its screen quality after comparing it to the Retina one. I don't have cataracts but the semi-cloudy hazy look of the Air screen gives me an idea of what that must be like. I am somewhat exaggerating but in my humble opinion, the Air's screen really diminished a fine laptop.

I have a 2013 MBP 15" retina and updated to Catalina beta and now have problems with not booting, screen black and shutting down on it's own. Reinstalled Mojave (twice ) and problem still exists. I wanted to get it repaired by Apple but they tell me it's a vintage machine and they will not do any repair. It was running fine before I stupidly did the beta. Have had it back to Genius bar twice and they said it could be repaired for $575 but when I requested a shipping box from Apple support, that's when they said no support. Extremely disappointed in Apple's response. I had done a backup but i'm concerned they are corrupted, as I tried to recover some files and machines continues to shutdown midway through recovering files.

Anyone else have this kind of problem with their MBP retina. Just a nightmare.

2013 15" rMBP with 16 GB of RAM and on the latest Mojave and no problems at all. Still going strong.

I'm still rocking a 15" 2012 cMBP as a daily home driver(using it right now for this post). I've upgraded it to 16Gigs of RAM and put in multiple SSDs. It's parked on my desk, hooked up to a monitor and doesn't travel anymore. It's working perfectly fine, but I also have a PC tower for heavy lifting.

On the go and traveling, I take the phone and iPad, but I no longer do any "computer work" while traveling. If I did, then I've have a reason to upgrade. But in the meantime, I hope it lasts several more years as I have no need to upgrade at the moment.

I was all excited about this question, but mine's an early 2011, so I don't qualify.

2011s are close enough to be relevant... mine is a late-2011 13" i5 (2.4ghz). I recently upgraded to 16GB of 1600mhz RAM, and a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD. Completely changed the machine. I think the 1600mhz RAM made a difference, as the old 8GB of 1333mhz RAM I had in the machine would nearly max out when having multiple tabs open in Safari, as well as running mail/messages/activity monitor/etc at the same time. Now with the 1600mhz speed in place, I almost never see over 6GB used during the same usage.

Just an FYI, 1600mhz RAM will not only work at full speed in any 2011 MBP, but also report correctly in "About this Mac", also.

Oh, and just to keep it relevant, I just purchased a mid-2012 15" MBP with the 2.3ghz quad-core CPU. I plan on transferring the 16GB of RAM from my late-2011 machine, and adding a Samsung EVO 860 1TB SSD. Can't wait!

I've still got a 2012 15" rMBP, however the keyboard has several unresponsive keys (self inflicted) and so it is now used a remote media server.

Still rocking the late 2013 rMBP with 16 gigs ram and 512 hard drive. Starting to think about getting a new battery and a 1tb hard drive (Transcend).

I was just working on my wife's 2013 the other day. I noticed initially it was a little sluggish, but it hadn't been restarted in 6 months. I did her OS updates, once it booted up.....just as quick today as it was the day she bought it. Thats why I love Mac!

I have the same computer as you. This past weekend using safari got very slow. I’m most likely going to go to a 13 inch for portability. I can always get a larger screen to stay at home but I can’t make a 15 inch screen smaller. I’m hoping it’s the right choice.

Look in the flesh if you can. The current 15” is a similar size to the 2012 era 13”. Perhaps smaller. I have a 2015 13” and in the 2015 sizing the 13” is perfect for me. But the new 13” models are substantially smaller and lighter. And with the new ones around the corner... (allegedly)

Late '13 15" rMBP 512 16. Still running strong. Updated to Mojave about a month ago, still runs great. No issues that I know of. Had it in the PH with me 2 years ago when the battery swelled up. Had a local phone shop guy find and install in a new battery, doubt it was genuine Apple. Battery still reports healthy. Used mostly as a media server, but chugs along like a champ.

Late 2013 15". Had the display replaced with the apple recall, and paid to have the battery replaced last year (the old one was swelling up and bumping up against the trackpad). Upgraded the SSD to the 2TB one this year... Gets hot, but still going strong.

My early 2013 MBPr still kickin’ strong. How many people have had theirs for 6-7 years?
My late 2012 has been fantastic although recently started getting warnings about running low on storage .... it just seems to "leak" storage so that it reduces down to 2GB and then issue warnings. At the time I am not even downloading or creating files just browsing on Safari. If I restart it seems to "reinstate" some leaked storage but not completely such that it gradually runs out of space and I need to delete other stuff ...... has anybody else experienced this or have any advice ? This is so frustrating because the MacBook still works great otherwise .... any help would be very much appreciated.

this is what i have. i just bought the 13 inch today. hopefully it gets here faster than it says it will. are you concerned about going to a smaller screen size?

What is your config you bought?

2.8 ghz i7, 16gb ram, 512 storage and 4 thunderbolt ports. i definitely got more computer than i need but since its not so easy to upgrade after purchasing i was okay with it.

My early 2013 13" rMBP is still running great but I've upgraded to a mid-2015 15". I needed moar power lol...

It's a great machine to loan out to friends or family members (or people if I'm fixing their computer). It's got battle scars, but works great! The only things it's needed are: tightening and thread locking the hinge screws inside the clutch cover (repaired myself) and a new hinge clutch cover (black plastic piece) that cracked...I assume do to heat lol. Battery has 650 charge cycles and around 90-93% health!
