according to the service manager at the Old Orchard store in IL, they will first replace everything, and will only give you a new one when something needs to be replaced for the second time.

My story however is a little different.
First my hd was replaced.
That didn't fix the problem, and they replaced the monitor a week later.
I had been complaining that it had been working very slow.
When i came in the third time with a different problem, I told them that i had been omplaining about the computer working slow, on top of the other problems i was having.
They said that their notes didnt show that i complained of it working slowly.
They determined that it was the logic board this time, and sent it away to a repair facility in texas.
I got a call a few days and they said that the technician found a foreign substance on the logic board and the superdrive, and that there was structural damage, and it would be 1200 to replace and my warrant had been voided.

I contacted the store that had replaced my hd and my monitor, and they escalated the issue.
Texas sent them my laptop, and they called me saying they found a brown stop on my superdrive.
I kept reminding them that they opened the computer twice in the last month, and that i have never had any liquids spilled.

Finally they agreed to replace my laptop for a new one.

4 times in 2 months

my Wife was the recipient of a brand new 17" uniMBP 4 days ago because her '06 first gen MBP had been in for service 4 times in the past 2 months. The latest was her voltage regulator went bad and fried the LCD screen and all the other times were very minor compared to that.
So here I type on MY brand new MBP thanks to the store manager (we did not even have to complain, he just offered a new one to us:D

So, I would assume you're asking this question out of curiosity (as it doesn't really apply since you've had your laptop replaced already)?

If so, you might want to look into "lemon laws"...no, they don't apply only to cars. ;)

Is it better to ask the store manager or call into Applecare and have them authorize it?
