I know there is a flat cable that connects the mother board and the display, what is the expected life based on open/close cycles, before it gets broken?

NOTE: Using a MacBook Pro 16 M1

I don't believe there's any such published stats. There's the data from the lid angle sensor accessible to Apple, but also perhaps too early in the 16" lifespan to provide meaningful information, aside from over-extension for warranty claims.

I've owned MacBook Pros since the aluminum PowerBook Pro G4 2000 and have never encountered a lid display or hinge failure. And I don't baby these laptops. I open the lid, do what I have to do, then close the lid. Multiple times a day.

Many thousands of times (with the exception of some old models which haven't been produced in a long time that were known to have premature hinge failure). There is no exact number that we know about.

Exactly. My 5,3 did have this in 2012 or so, ended up damaging the ribbon cable and shorting the screen. It has however been rock solid (on that front) ever since.

And that whole fluxgate issue

14,283 times.

It used to be only 13,752 times, but they raised it after flexgate...o_O

My 2012 MBP has not had any issues, and while its no longer a daily driver, I did fire it up a month or two and everything still works.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I think these machines are engineered for such uses

In all seriousness, my mid-2014 MacBook Pro was still going strong without any signs of degradation before I finally upgraded a month ago.

My Mid-09 13" MBP still looks as good as the day I got it. It's unfortunate that I had to finally get a new MBP due to the hardware being outdated but I was happy to buy another as they are built to last.

This is an example of something that is not worth worrying about.
My 4 yr old MacBook pro — that cost €2000 has just had the pink stripes of death — quote for replacement screen is €739. My previous macbook lasted 8 years. Am wondering if the Flexgate issue has been resolved as thinking of cutting my losses and getting a macbook air M2

I hope with the latest revisions of the hardware they have resolved all the previous screen flat cables issues
