Hi, I am going to purchase a new Series 5 today, this will be my 3rd Apple Watch, my first was a series 1 no cellular, my second was a SS Series 3, but in all honesty I never once used the cellular, as a matter of fact not sure it even worked. Would not always get phone calls if I did leave the house without my phone. I have disconnected the 2nd cellular line telling Verizon that I was trading it in but they kept telling me that this watch would not work without the cellular but after being disconnected calls are still coming through my watch. OK so my question is how many have stepped down and purchased a non-cellular after having had a cellular? I wish they sold the SS without cellular. Can I purchase the SS and not connect cellular both the Apple Store and Verizon make one believe it must be connected.

I did this year

I bought the SS series 5 with cellular and returned it for the Nike series 5. Saved myself a good £400 as I never used cellular as I was never without my phone

As good as SS is and looked I couldn’t justify over £400 more when it does the same as my Nike series 5

Yes you can buy the SS and it will work fine without the cellular connected.

First AW I bought was the S5 SS and have the cellular connected. I then bought the S5 Nike+ edition (GPS + Cellular version). When I tried to have cellular service set up on the Nike version (Friday evening) T-Mobile had some strange issue where they could only setup one watch at a time (if one showed cellular the other one wouldn't) and had to have a higher tier call me back Monday. I used the Nike version all weekend long without cellular hooked up and it worked fine.

Now both have cellular working, but yes a cellular version can be used without cellular being activated.

Thanks, that is what I thought but of course they want you to add the additional phone line.

I am kind of where you are with justifying the cost, I have had the SS (silver) for two years and like it but to get another one the additional cost and not needing the cellular just seems rather crazy. I am leaning toward the Space Grey Aluminum. I think it looks a bit better than the silver. Possibly upgrading to a better band.

How many Apple watches have I owned? _A lot_. 😁

[This picture Doesn’t include the latest generation Apple watches with the Series 3/4 and Series 5 either. ]

(Oh, and before anyone comments, yes I have expendable income and yes I wanted this many Apple watches, well...because I can.)

I like upgrading my watch every year and £429 each year I can justify far more than over £800

I'm kind of like you except I bought my first ever Apple Watch in the beginning of November. It is a S5 Silver Stainless Steel and then on Black Friday I bought a Nike edition (GPS + Cellular). Why? because I wear the SS when I go out or dress up and the Nike whenever I'm going to the gym or on a run. I'm thinking about picking up the Natural Titanium version next month.

Will never step down from cellular. It’s my safety net. Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it although I have needed it a couple times. Actually, I didn’t get the S0, S1 or S2 because it didn’t offer cellular. Was using something else at the time. You can argue that you always have your phone with you. Well, I did too and sh*t happens. To each their own though.

I have owned 5 Apple Watches and am really impressed with the series 5. Apple will really need to step up the features for series 6 for me to upgrade. Otherwise, I have no problems staying with the series 5 for 2+ years.

My series 5 is cellular and would not downgrade to GPS only as my main watch. I also have a series 3 GPS that is used for sleep tracking.

Original stainless, original gold aluminum, series 3 LTE space gray aluminum, series 4 aluminum, series 5 stainless.

Handed my original stainless down to one of my kids, gave my S4 to my father. Others are still in a drawer and in working condition.

I'm the opposite. I'm on my third watch and have never had a cellular one. I'm toying with getting one next time without the service just in case I need a 911 call when my phone isn't available.

I have owned SS S0, SS S3, SBSS S4 and natural Titanium S5. I couldn’t step down to aluminum. I just enjoy a more premium watch. Connected cellular on S3 but, never found a need for it so disconnected it.

I've owned 3 so far. S2, S4 GPS only and when S4 was on the ridiculous sale price I picked up a SS S4. I have not enabled LTE and still unsure if I will. My phone goes where I go and I rarely if ever forget to bring it along. As long as the two are within rage of each other and the phone has LTE connectivity, you can get calls on the Watch without having LTE enabled

I did however enable LTE on the S4 we bought for my mother this Christmas. I want that peace of mind in case she goes out without her phone, she also has a way to connect with us in emergency and also in the event she falls. Verizon charges $30 activation fee, first month of LTE is waved on the watch and $10/month after that. If you go through Verizon to buy the watch, I believe they wave the activation fee.

Verizon charged me $10 plus tax on my S3 after 3 month free trial period. I’m never without my phone. I canceled cellular as I thought $12 per month was ridiculous For something I never used.

How's battery life on cellular models? I avoided it based on experience with an old Gear S cellular watch a few years ago. On bluetooth only it would get a day and a half. On Cellular/wifi standalone it barely made 4 hours. It was entirely unusable on cellular/using it as a phone. really sad when I wanted to run without my phone playing music. Was not able to make 2.5 hours doing music over cellular at all.

Are Watches with cellular any different? Is cellular always-on or auto or manual?

Cellular connection is only used when the phone is neither in bluetooth nor wifi range. You can also just disable it and use the watch like a non cellular version. With cellular activated, my battery lasts up to 36h, without cellular activated, around 48h.

Wow. Certainly better than my Gear S. The Gear S was basically a smartwatch that was also a cellular phone. Had identical hardware and its own number (no number sharing-although if remotely paired via 3G/Wifi it would use the phone's number instead of its own.)

Are the watches the same or is cellular treated a lot differently?

I don’t know if this answers your question but I am sharing numbers. If the phone rings, the watch rings, too. If I only have the watch with me and the phone at home, I can independently take and make calls on the watch. The contacts get synced. It’s really a good backup solution, though calling via cellular drains the battery fast.

Is the phone number different on the watch in standalone?

I opted for the GPS/wifi version because I was concerned if I chose to use Apple Music or Radio on the watch in standalone I'd get as horrible battery life as my Gear S. Sure, 2.5 hours to 3 hours is enough to close your rings but I like long nature walks for 6 hours plus. Why I never went for AirPods too, advertised 3-4 hour life would be insufficient and charging them breaks immersion; I immerse myself in music. Plus, having my phone with me doesn't feel like a burden. I might want to snap a photo of a deer nearby or a nice scene for a wallpaper.

No, it’s the same number. O2 allows to share your number and data to multiple devices at no extra cost. So I use 3 devices with the same number, watch and 2 phones.

That's likely what killed my Gear then, as that watch was just in reality a watch-based cellular phone.

In that perspective, the Apple watch too is a tiny cellphone. But it only uses cellular if it has no other option and is otherwise quite savvy with energy consumption. Also, I guess nobody will use it for hour long calls, it’s more like a backup solution.

Up until Christmas Day I had an original Series 0 space grey aluminum. My wife gave me a new Series 5 space grey aluminum (non LTE) So far it's been great. Lots of new features as compared to the series 0. However, it works fine and generally still gets a full day's battery life. I gave it to my daughter and she's been happy with it so far. The new Series 5 seems to last about twice as long, though I do put it on the charger every night, as I really don't like to sleep with it on.

As for cellular, I have no need as I always have my iPhone with me. So I cannon answer that question for you. AT&T did tell me there would be a charge to add it to my account and an additional cost if I did get a cellular watch. Though that was a year ago when I was considering a series 4 so I am not sure about the costs.
