I ask because my beloved Dell Inspiron 8200 is on it's last legs (trackpad not working correctly & struggles with high-res graphics). I bought it in 2002 & so it's 7 years old this year - which I think is pretty good going as it's been used fairly heavily every day.

I'd really like to switch to :apple: & buy a 17" Macbook Pro - if I did, do you think it's reasonable for me to expect to get 7 years heavy use out of that too? To other Macbook owners, how many years have you got out of it before you had to upgrade?

Many thanks,
:)

We've had several Dell's - some only lasting 2 years, im surprised about your 7 years but glad to hear it lasted that long. I don't have a Macbook Pro, but have had an iBook for 6 years and it is still doing everything for my needs. A little slow when it comes to some programs, but thats understandable. Its very outdated though - running on 256mb or ram - seems so little compared to the specs these days. I would think you would get 5 solid years of use out of the Pro and could upgrade its specs and continue using it further.

Same here...

2 years and apart from the battery (which desperately needs to be changed) is going strong.

Did have its superdrive replaced though (as did most people i know who have a mbp of the old shape), so its wise to buy applecare.

mine's a rev. b, i think, of the original intel CD releases - comin' up on last year of applecare :( - had to replace the superdirve (once), the screen (once - dead pixels) and that's about it.

wnat to replace the original hd (only 120gb), but waiting for a'care to expire, so i don't void the wtty JIC i have to send it in b4 the a'care expires!

i know a buddy of mine who has a (seriously) messed up pb g4 (like he holds the case together w/scotch tape, you can see the screen hardware 'burned' into the screen, sand from the beahc, etc) and not only does it STILL power up, but it STILL works! they don't make 'em like they used to, sure, but they are still more resilient in comparison, if u ask me, than the pc lappys i've known...

anyway, jsut my 2 cents (or 1 depending on the day)...

My Powerbook G4 lasted for 8 years. It's officially "not worth repairing" at this point. Of course, I practically never took it anywhere--obviously, carrying it around all the time puts it at more risk of things breaking. In the end, its death was a hardware death. It still ran fine in terms of the OS and everything (well, as well as it could, given its age and processor).

Anyway, Macs generally last for ages, at least with some work. It's just that they won't be able to handle the newer software and peripherals.

My 12" PB getting into it's 5th year and still rolling nicely. Had to replace the battery, but that's it - which is great considering it's been used/carried a lot, (even dropped on occasion, suffering external dents etc).

PB 12" - best computer Apple's made, I reckon, (so far, anyway);)

I'll have had mine for 3 years in March. Honestly, it's my favorite computer. The reason I haven't replaced it is because I'm waiting until Nehalem (mobile Core i7) makes it into the new unibodies and I'll be game. Until then, I'm quite content.
