I heard people are getting 10-12 hours per charge on the ipad. How much battery life do you think you'll get with moderate browsing on 3g? I'm thinking 3-4 hours of browsing. What do you think?

10 minutes. If you turn the brightness down.

    I think that's a ridiculous, baseless guesstimation.

The Ivory Tower (I'm not coming down)
It'd be kind of weak if you got 10-12 on the wifi iPad but only 3-4 on the 3G.

I'm gonna be optimistic here and say 5-6 hours, I would think Apple would work hard to make sure it didn't deplete it that much

    then again, maybe not

Apple doesn't distinguish on their specs pages between WiFi-only and Wifi+3G iPads. If you read the fine print on how they tested for battery life, you'll see it included 3G test for internet access. It's somewhat vague how much 3G testing they did, but I wouldn't expect much battery difference between WiFi only and 3G only use: certainly not by a factor of 2 or 3.

i read somewhere the 3g is rated at one hour less battery life than the wifi only

Well, why don't we just go straight to the source?

Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music

Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using 3G data network

Testing conducted by Apple in March 2010 using preproduction iPad units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge while performing each of the following tasks: video playback, audio playback, and Internet browsing using Wi-Fi or 3G.

Video content was a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store.

Audio content was a playlist of 358 unique songs, consisting of a combination of songs imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC encoding) and songs purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC encoding).

Internet over Wi-Fi and 3G tests were conducted using a closed network (for Wi-Fi only) and dedicated web and mail servers, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour.

All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network (except for Internet browsing over 3G); the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off.

Battery life depends on device settings, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPad units; actual results may vary.

EDIT: Emphasizing battery estimates. Since Apple was right on the money about the 10 hours for the WiFi only iPad, I see no reason to expect anything substantially less than 9 hours for the 3G version.

My wifi is getting over 10 hours. I am sure 3G will drain more, and GPS location service, etc... But I would expect over 6 hours.

It would depend on how much of the actual 3G data you used, really. I find that my iPhone loses charge much quicker when on 3G, compared to Edge or WiFi. I think my normal on the iPhone with 3G is about 1-2 hours less than with WiFi. I imagine it will be between 1-3 hours at the most.

Wow, some of you people are pretty dense. It's not as though this information hasn't been spoon-fed to you in this thread and others just like it.

I think it's safe to say that the wifi get 12hrs, I've been using mine since 10am(pacific) and I'm at 45% right now, the battery life is ungodly on this thing :D
