Do the older phones, even a XS go quite a bit lower in price when new phones come out? Is it worth waiting until then?

Based on previous trend, the phone will either be $100 cheaper than current price, or it will be discontinued altogether (when that happens, discounts will vary depending on the retailers).
Imo at the $1k price points, saving $100 probably is not worth it if you can get the latest and greatest for just $100 more.

It might as well be worthless now. I'll take it off your hands. $100. (yw)

( :p )

Should mostly be fine in terms of value. Yes, there will be a decrease. You could probably find that out using a site that tracks average iPhone value over time (the link eludes me) and time it with the iPhone release dates to see just by how much.

Edit: I found one source.

----------------------

"
  1. The largest drops occur as new phones are released or just prior to release. Prices drop slightly after the announcement, then significantly after the release.
  2. There is a dip in June and July, then an uplift in offer prices for most iPhones in August every year.
  3. Plus and Max models are holding their value much better than basic models, including the smaller capacity models.
  4. The higher capacity models have increased (with the most recent uplift) by a greater percentage than the lower capacity models.
  5. During the second-year post-release, devices reach a plateau and depreciate much slower than during the years before and after.

It’s a good question that gets asked every year, typically Apples discount is about $100, but carriers might be more, depending on what they have for stock and if they’re running any promotions on top of that. But Apple is pretty strict with their pricing, and the most you’d probably see from them wouldn’t be anything over $100.

I always thought they did, but it seems to depend.

I've just researched this now. I bought my 7 Plus 128GB in 2016 for 96,000 Yen (I'm in Japan). The Apple Store is still selling the 7 Plus 128 GB in 2019, for 75,800 plus tax at 8%, so roughly 81,000 Yen. Considering it's 3 year old tech, the price hasn't dropped that much...

In one way, it's quite a compliment that I 'chose wisely' with the 7 Plus as it's still good enough to be sold new in Apple Stores, but on the other hand, it's a shame. If they dropped the price to half or less, I'd get a new one of those when mine dies instead of getting into the $1,000 plus model rat race...

I bought my product red 256GB 7+ in November 2017 for about $700 from T-Mobile. That's about $30 more than what Apple is selling the 128gb for right now in the US store.

That’s shocking isn’t it? I bet the trade in price is nowhere near that though.

It IS a good phone though... maybe it’s like the iPad Air 2 of the iPhone world...

Here's an example of savings.

I purchased a brand new, unused (refurbished) 64GB iPhone 6 Plus in 2015 for $580 on Swappa. The latest model was the 6S Plus, so I was one generation behind. A new 64 GB iPhone 6 Plus in 2014 cost $749 on launch day.
