When looking at a Hard Drive, how do you know exactly how much
data is on the drive and how much is free space...?

What is a little confusing, is that there are 2 figures
    telling you 2 different numbers....

    As in my attached photo,

the top figure says: 99.22 GB of data !

and the bottom figure says in parenthesis : (106,487,257,696 bytes)

So which one is accurate ?? Thanks !

They are both accurate, one is measure in GB and one is measured in bytes. Unfortunately in the computer world the conversion between the two does not adhere to a strict power of 10 in terms of math.

They both mean the same thing just using different measures. The bytes is the actual number of individual specs of data.

Both numbers are correct. A kilobyte of data is 1024 bytes.

So, if you multiply the 99.22 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 your will get a reasonably close answer to the second one.

The first one is more human readable.
