I always buy phones with cash, direct from Apple, never finance, never through a carrier.

I both trade in whatever phone I'm currently using and wait until I've amassed a bunch of credit card points I can flip into a statement credit to drive the price down further. I currently use a 13 Pro. It's been a while so I don't remember exactly what my out-of-pocket was, but I think it was around $200.

Out of pocket? I never paid anything out of pocket for an iPhone…

Just got the 16 Pro, with nothing out of pocket. I pay between $30-35 a month for 5G cell coverage.

Yes, presumably I am paying for the phone in the cost of the cell coverage…but it is not like I can get a cheaper cell plan if I don’t take advantage of these carrier deals that give you a free phone.

The price of the base 16 Pro alone would be around $27.75/month (36 months) to $41.63/month (24 months) plus tax. I assume the $30-35/month is for just one line of a plan with several lines i.e., the total cost of the plan would be $120 to $140 or more per month?

I bought mine with cash over the counter. Always do. Since this is in Sweden it's difficult to compare the cost, but roughly $750 for a 13 mini, June 2022. Still have it in use.

I paid $100 for my current phone; only because my employer gave me a stipend to buy a new phone, but normally I pay full price. I don't use or like carrier deals, because they require a trade-in, among other reasons.

I tried to go boujee and go directly through Apple for my 14 Plus. All in all, I financed $1109 for the device, 2yrs AC+, and taxes.

Definitely not worth it because I ended up just giving my iPhone XS to my dad instead of trading it because he retired and didn’t keep his work phone. Could have trimmed a huge amount off of a carrier trade in or a trade in at Timmy C’s. Next one I’ll probably just trade and finance through the carrier. Sure the term might be 1 year longer, but it’s really helpful when I don’t have as nearly as much of a device payment eating into my monthly budget.

Paid full price for my 14 Pro Max at the Apple Store. Have a SIM only deal with O2 UK for £13 a month, that gets me 15Gb a month data, unlimited calls, unlimited texts and a cellular plan on my Ultra. I used to get phones through my carrier but I don't like getting tied into contracts or debt if I can help it.

Paid with my Apple Card to get the cash back for my 14 PM. I think I got $500 for my 13 PM.

I don’t do carrier discounts or Apple financing anymore because that locks you into a 2-3 year contract. At least in the USA you can get far better deals with an MVNO and it’s the exact same cell service. The exception is if you travel internationally and don’t want to bother with buying eSIMs.

One line?

I'd love to have that monthly price for my eight lines.

Correct, that is $30-35 a month per line and we have 4 lines on the account. 5G ultra wide band and hotspot are not included. To add those costs an extra $15 per line, which two of our lines do need.

It is a 36 month device credit - so if we leave sooner, we would be on the hook to payoff the pro-rated remainder on the phone.

As you said, retail payments for the phone alone would be $28, so it is a good deal for us. Of course, I am assuming Verizon isn’t paying Apple retail price for these phones.

Which carrier if I may ask, very curious? 😀🤔

This was Verizon. Got an e-mail from Verizon that two of our lines were eligible for this deal (it was during pre-order) on any Unlimited plan. That was fine, as the other two lines have an iPhone 14 Pro already and don’t really need to upgrade.

This is one reason I dislike the main carrier. Unless you get 4 lines they penalize you on your bill. I paid $60+ for one line with their cheapest unlimited plan.

Usually do a trade in of some sort through carrier but my t-mobile legacy plan no longer gets deals/promos so I switched to a 15$/line Verizon MNVO plan and bought our phones from Apple with the Apple Card.

I get the impression that most people have phones that are in one way or another heavily discounted by the carrier, making demand relatively inelastic in the same way that (depending on what country you live in) healthcare or school uniforms are, regardless of price.
I have the iPhone 16 Pro Max version with 1TB of storage. I bought it on pre-order and payment. I paid exactly 1300 dollars with the ambassadorship discount. That's a 25 to 30 percent discount for me

For the last 15 years, whatever Apple charges for it SIM-free.
The 16 Pros are therefore approx $1650 USD equivalent with Applecare.

The pandemic had an unexpected upside though, I hung onto my phones for the full duration of it because I wasn't using them for anything other then being the nexus of iMessage/Facetime. so they've been on charge for most of this decade so far.

Previously I used to change my phones every two years at most, now I fully appreciate that was just something I did because I felt like I should. Unless Apple Intelligence renders these obsolete way sooner, I think I'll probably hang onto the 16's for another 5 years.

I paid Apple $1482.94 outright for my 512GB 15PM. I saved biweekly for it the year before, so that it wouldn’t feel like a huge purchase. I pay monthly for AppleCare+ with theft and loss, in case I upgrade yearly. This year I decided not to upgrade and used the money for something else. I started my biweekly savings for next year’s 17PM.

Launch day iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB £1,199 direct from Apple, plus £239 for two years coverage of AppleCare+ with Theft & Loss. Traded my iPhone 13 Pro Max 256GB in at an Apple Store one week later for £355. Resulting in a total cost of £1,083 (£844 if you disregard the AppleCare+, as I was still using it on my 13PM anyway so I don't see it as an extra).

ok, I ponied up the ticket price for my current iPhone 2020 se and my wife's iPhone 12 mini. the discount I get is for navy types not sure if it applies to the phone. don't see any sense in long term contracts

It's from Skinny, but I think you may have misunderstood: I gave the approximate price in USD for comparison purposes, not to imply that it's a plan available in the US.
Ah. I was like, how come I've never heard of such low-priced plans in the US, lol!

I think it a bit over $900 cash for my 14 pro. 256gb

Sold my 15PM 256gb for AUD$1650 and bought the 16PM 256gb for AUD$2150, so $500 out of pocket.

Most carriers here no longer subsidise the phones. They generally offer the phone at full price which can be paid back in instalments over 24 - 36 months, making it effectively a no-interest loan. The downside of this loan is that you need to sign up for a mobile plan for the same term, often forgoing other discounts available to you, or impeding your ability to switch carriers should a better offer arise. I have been able to negotiate a sizeable discount from my carrier and would be worse off acquiring my phone on a plan.
