I plan on getting an Apple Watch S4 with Cellular later on but was curious how does it work? I am currently enrolled with AT&T for my iPhone. Does it use the same nano sim card and what sort of rates or data plan do I need to get? Is there a unique data/cellular plan just for the Apple Watch? Sorry I'm unfamiliar with how this works. I hope it's not expensive and will have unlimited data.

There's just an additional $10/mo fee to add the watch to your account. It uses the data from the iPhone line it's paired with.

There’s no physical SIM card for the Apple Watch, it’s a built in chip inside the watch.

Also, whilst I’m in the UK all I read about in the US for watches is the extra charges and taxes on the $10 fee that mean people pay 14-17 dollars quite often.

For comparison it’s £5 in the UK and we’ve just added a 2nd carrier option.

How would that work when you travel internationally with your watch? Do you have to switch to a pre-paid plan or what? Or will it use the data with whatever sim card you have installed on your phone?

T-Mobile in the USA charges $10 no additional fees as long as you are using auto pay.

I pay $5 AU (about $3.75 US) for mine (and free for the first three months).

Not bad as generally generally telecommunications are pricey here in Oz.

£5 per month in the uk. Considering it uses your existing data plan, and actually it won’t be used much at all (battery life is poor on LTE, doesn’t need it when near your phone or known WiFi spot), it still feels a rip off at any price.

Should be a free add on as a way for operators to retain customers, or to get them to buy in to more expensive iPhone contracts.

Thanks. I was looking for this.

LTE doesn’t work when roaming, so you’re stuck with your watch working the same as a GPS only model.

The number bonding trick the carriers use doesn't work when roaming, so none of the cellular features work internationally at this point. The standards that would allow this are still in draft stage.

If you swapped out SIMs, in theory that would work, but you'd need to pick a carrier that supports the watch and its e-SIM and set up a new account for both devices. I would guess that nobody bothers with this.

CAN YOUR IPHONE BE AT&T AND YOUR WATCHJ T-MOBILE?

No! both devices must be on the same carrier, same post-paid plan.

Not all carrier plans support the addition of a Wearable line (this is what the watch needs). The Wearable line is an additional line that is added to your post-paid plan. The Watch uses a new e-SIM that is provisioned as part of the activation model.

These are the current AT&T plans that support adding a Wearable line for your watch:
  • AT&T Unlimited &MoreSM
  • AT&T Unlimited & MoreSM Premium
  • AT&T Mobile Share FlexSM
Your watch is assigned a phone number by the carrier and they use back-end systems to bind the watch's phone number to the paired iPhone's number. This is what allows you to appear to share a single phone number.
