IMHO, 256-512 GB is "enough".

Sure, YMMV but if you look at how much of the data on your machine you actually use (rather than just have sitting there doing nothing 99% of the time) most will probably find you need a lot less space on the actual machine.

Then again, i've got 5 machines in the house so I guess i'm more inclined to stick stuff on the NAS anyway so it's available on whatever machine i happen to be using...

Yes, some may have a few hundred gig of data they regularly use, but most don't.

Mac Pro with 4 internal hard drives. Terabyte or more each. And an external terabyte FireWire hard drive. About 1 gigabyte free between the 5 drives.

Gets fun with all the video editing projects. But it does it.

I typically have around 50% free space on my drives. Within the last couple of months I upgraded my rMBP SSD to a 480GB drive from Transcend and put my stock 256 in an included external enclosure. Works great, I'd highly recommend this solution for those looking for a similar option. Drive is faster and bigger than what was in there previously. And now I have a USB 3.0 SSD external!

I made the decision to never buy another computer with less than 500GB again. While I can survive with a 256GB drive, it's a hassle to maintain my files and such below the threshold. 500GB is peace of mind for me. Sure it'd be nice to have an even larger drive, but I'll stick to 500GB since Apple still prices their SSDs like its 2010. Honestly though I really don't require more than 500GB 99% of the time so I use externals and Dropbox for stuff like that.

I have made it a habit to install as little as possible on my Macbook pro .... It does have a 256GB SSD but I want to keep it as open as possible. Have 184GB free still. I do have a windows laptop with a 1TB HDD and only about 50GB free because I have all my other programs on that. Only use my Macbook pro for school really with a few games.

I only have 256 GB and have been down to <20 GB free space. Currently ~65 GB. Yeah, definitely have to monitor it, uninstall as needed.

Got a 128 GB Transcend for movies, music, pics, etc.

13GB free out of 128GB SSD. I bought this Air 3 years ago, it was the 13" base model.
It's hamstrung me a lot, biggest being that I can only run Windows in a VM, as there's not enough space for a Windows partition.
This fall will be the start of my last year as a student, so I'm planning to go all out and buy an rMBP with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.
Not sure if I'll get the 13" or 15" (without dGPU).

To free up space, I use DaisyDisk to locate large files.
I've had this long-running bug where this cache file grows non-stop for no reason, so I delete and reboot now and then. http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/83978/what-is-com-apple-coresymbolicationd-in-caches
I always use AppCleaner to delete programs, as certain programs leave a ton of data behind.

Yep, I have an external 1TB HDD that's less than half full. I only find it useful for stuff I don't use often, as I don't always carry my HDD.

My MBP is in the 25 to 50% threshold, but my 5k iMac with a 2TB Fusion drive has gobs and gobs of free space.
