I was considering selling my 2017 27-inch 5K iMac for around USD1,000.

Is this a fair price? Cosmetically flawless. No scratches or dings. Specs below:

- 4.2GHz Quad-core i7, Turboboost up to 4.5GHz
- 64GB 2400MHz DDR4
- 2TB Flash Storage
- AMD Radeon Pro 580 8GB
- Magic Mouse
- Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad

You're probably asking too much. That's closer to what people are paying for 2019 models.

I agree you are asking too much. I’m thinking of selling my base-model 2020 — which among other things has a much improved webcam, etc. — and I think I’d be lucky to get $1,000 for that.

FWIW, my 2019 27" Retina 5K iMac with i9 and 1TB SSD is worth $1055 for Apple trade-in credit. The GPU and RAM have no impact on price, which makes my Vega48 and 128GB upgrades worthless to Apple.

Back in October I sold my 2017 (i7/32GB/1TB/580) via eBay and I think I got about $1200 for it, which was a couple-hundred more than what Apple was offering me on trade-in.

Something is worth what someone else will pay for it. Try posting it on the usual sales sites and see what happens. Best case: you sell it for what you’re asking. Worst case: you don’t. Doesn’t seem to be high risk to me, and you’ll quickly learn if the price is inappropriate, certainly faster than getting feedback from comments here…like mine.

Thanks for the feedback. These comments are actually very helpful as it arms me with relevant data. Its only low risk if I was asking the right amount or too much. Now I have a better idea of what I can and should get. Thank you all.

I have the base 2017 model. How much should I ask for it? (Selling locally....)

That is a high spec 2017, especially with the 2TB SSD. I suggest $950, just below the 4-figure psychological barrier.

Fusion drive and i5? Maybe $750?

2TB is somewhat exclusive. But all the rest of the specs can be had or better with 2019 2020 models. 64GB doesn't mean much as they are just aftermarket SODIMMs.

I think 1000 is fair, will probably sell quite quickly. If you are patient list it higher and hope if someone likes your particular complete package, I mean even your KB is the numpad version.

(btw I got a 2017 i7 580 with 64GB as well, but it is *only* 1TB. Will never sell it)

It's interesting to be reading posts like this from 'across-the-pond'. My first reactions are it would appear that the prices you pay new are less than here in Europe. Secondly for those selling a 2017 27" iMac, and wish to maximise on the second hand market - you are definitely in the wrong country!;)
I've just looked through a great number of similar ads here and a 2017 27" iMacs with i5, 16Go RAM and 1Tb SSD lists on average for 1500euros (US$1650). Buyers here may possibly negotiate $100 lower but I'm pretty sure it would sell for close to asking price. A base i5 model with fusion drive can be found ranging from 700 to 1100euros (US$770-1200).
As for an -i7 with the same spec as the seller here, I guess there are many who would sell their grandma for that, or part exchange their mother-in-law and add a pot of gold as an incentive.....:p

I recently sold this exact configuration (just after the 14” was released) for SEK 17000, which is about USD 1800. The guy who bought it wrote “I’ll take it”, no haggling, within minutes of the ad going live. I thought the price was reasonable.

Maybe I just found the right buyer at the right time?

Well, 2nd hand Mac market is hugely separated by regions, currency / original Apple pricing / supply / tax etc. For anyone who bought their Mac in Euros, of course you would list it higher than the US since you originally paid more to bring it into your country already.

I don't know the prices in US 2nd hand market but, with your high spec 2017 model, surely in Italy you can resell it for more than 2000 EUR.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm actually located in Hong Kong where many of us continue to work from home. I will list it for around USD1,000 which I feel is a fair price. If it doesn't move after a week or so, I'm happy to lower it further so someone can get an even better deal.

Wow, with these values in Scandinavia, continental Europe and the UK, I’ll try to sell mine there rather than here in the US! These prices, even with shipping, are incredible. Not sure about customs fees and taxes though for a 5-year-old iMac. Really eye-opening for me.

There are still several "export" issues to deal with in the USA when selling anything with a CPU or GPU to a foreign country. Many seem to get away with ignoring, but the risk is completely not worth it for a few extra dollars.

The top-spec 24" iMac is $1699. Adding 6% sales tax brings it up to $1800.

The same configuration in Sweden is SEK 20995 (including 25% VAT) which is about $2200.

That's 22% more. This seems pretty much consistent with other comparisons I've done in recent years.

There must be market factors playing a role other than slightly higher prices when used gear is being sold for 70-80% more than in the US.

The Hong Kong 2nd hand Mac market is quite special, when new they pay prices close to US before tax, but don’t have a large enough pool of users offloading old Macs so the isn’t much supply. And most people prefer MacBooks due to (lack of) living space. 2nd hand iMacs are there but don’t seem to be listed often enough to give a clear picture of how much they should cost. When I go to Carousell or DCfever I am seeing like 30 or 40 MacBooks before seeing two iMacs, and maybe one mini. And when you see an iMac it is often an older base model with Fusion Drive, lol.
