How much is the max RAM?

This might sound like a rookie question, but I have to ask. I have a 2011 MacBook and I would like to upgrade my 4 GB RAM to 8, or even possibly 16 GB RAM. Is this possible? I have scoured the internet for answers to this question, but could not seem to find an answer. Please help me. Thank you!

The white 2011 Macbook can take up to 8GB. The metal 2011 Macbook Pro can take up to 16GB.
