Since the rumors of iPhone 8 or whatever (since it hasn't officially been announced yet), it looks like the price of the iPhone gotten to 1k USD level ...just basing on rumors. Just from watching Samsung note 8 keynote, I realized that they were following Apple's footstep and charging the note 8 at starting price at 960-ish.

Now...it's not my business whether you decide to buy that high price rumored iPhone or not, but I presume there is a limit to many people. Regardless what the reasons are for buying or not, I just want to know where does phone companies like Apple or Samsung cross the line?

I'm sure there's got to be a line that these companies can't cross.

For me, I would say after these generation phones releases, I think that would be the end of the road.

How about you? Where do these companies cross your line? REGARDLESS of the reason(s) why or why you wouldn't purchase it.

I like to upgrade every year, so as long as they keep it to $1,500 or less, I'll probably upgrade. While I have an iPad and MacBook Pro, I rely on the iPhone more than anything and am willing to spend a good amount to ensure it is up to date and performing as well as possible. It's the only big ticket item I really treat myself to each year, and really enjoy the experience.

I share your thoughts. I also upgrade annually. As much as I have enjoyed my iPhone 7 Plus, I look forward to the rumored technology and physical changes expected. Ultimately, I justify the price point based off my usage and appreciation for what this new iPhone has to offer. And in my case, I think the OLED model Is my choice this year based on its capabilities , which the price point justifies Itself.

This is exactly how I feel.

The line goes up every year. :(
My first flip phone in the 90's, the line was $200.
This year it is about $1500.
Next year maybe $2000. I think that's the end of the line....

I love driving myself crazy and following these forums as soon as I preorder. Following planes and creating/debating ridiculous theories about when the phones are coming or why they aren't is a ton of fun. Turns me me into a psycho, but it's fun.

I'd say about the price the 6S was on launch. I could justify that on contract. With a young family I have better things to spend my money on and £1000+ for a mobile phone is moronic. I don't like being played for a fool by a company I've given a lot of money to in the past. The iPhone hype is starting to wear off with me.
It all comes down to priority.

Price was never a concern for me! I love the way iPhone 8 is Going to look. OLED screen reduced bezels this is all i was looking for past several years. And now Apple is finally bring it to the lineup. I will buy it even if it's avobe $1000 [most likely i will buy base model of iPhone 8]

If carriers offer the same "free with trade" deal they did last year I will bite. I have also told myself that this can also mean payng an additional $350 down, or just billed monthly over two years since that makes up the difference between $650 and $100.

Anything north of that and I walk. Want versus need and with a new battery my 6s plus will be just fine for another year, at minimum, but probably two.

I think it became too much when the 6/6+ came out and they went over £600 - since then I've been a year behind on my upgrades. For me, the main issue is that no matter what they do its just "same meat, different gravy" and I still only really use it for iMessage, Twitter, mail, camera and browsing - which pretty much every iPhone can do. The additional things are nice, but not nice enough

*goes on to pre-order iPhone 8 256GB @ £1200*

In my country iPhone is already too expensive. Since 32GB are not enough for me I only consider the mid tier, €909 with taxes (About $1100). The plus, which I'd consider this year since I want the dual camera, is €1049 ($1260).
As I said, tax included, but still a huge amount of money if you compare with the US.

Buying the phone outright is really hard, but it's my preferred choice. As far as I remember in the US you have 12 months warranty, but in the EU we have 24 months and after the first year you can bring the phone to the AS and have it fixed by them only if you bought the phone via the AS. If you bought it via carrier you have to bring the phone to their shop to have warranty after 12 months, then they send the phone to Apple and that mean you can have it back in 2 o 3 weeks.
You can buy Apple care and have the 2 years warranty with Apple, but since we have 24 months is not as important as activating it in the US.

No iPhone upgrade program for us, at least not yet, so either you buy it outright or you get it via a carrier on a 24 or 30 months contract.
In the end I think I'll upgrade my 6s only if Apple will launch the upgrade program this year in my country, so I'll get the 7s+ and then move to the OLED version next year when hopefully it will have a lower price and be more available.
Without upgrade program I think I'll wait for another year, then buy the phone outright next year moving to a 3 years upgrade cycle.

$999 for 128gb is my threshold for purchasing it no matter what

If it's any worse than that (like $999 for 64gb) then I don't know, the phone better be freaking amazing, or else replacing the battery in my 6S+ will look more and more appealing.

Any place but here or there....
Considering how little I use all the bells and whistles, $1050 was too much for my 7+ including warranty, free case and charger. So I will be probably stay a generation or two behind the latest phone going forward to keep the price down and more importantly to be inline with what I actually use on the phone.

I noticed more people are doing that..to stay at a generation behind.

I evaluate the costs on a daily basis. Right now my iPhone costs me about $1.40 per day, which is fine in my eyes with the amount of usage it gets. I am not sure exactly where it would top out, maybe $3.00 per day.

It really depends what the device has, I updated To the 7 Plus Last year for the dual camera and Bokeh Effect (and I love it) this year with the 8/Edition being a BIG upgrade I willl get it. Most likely in 128GB/64GB with the Blush Gold colour, as for cost it's not really a problem.

Personally, I think $1,000 is way too much. Just a few short years ago, a top of the line smartphone was around $500. With that being said, I'm still preordering the iPhone 8. I will be selling my 6s Plus (64GB), which will help shoulder some of the cost.

It depends on how many years I've had my previous phone for when it's time to buy a new one. The more use I get out of something, the more it can cost; or in this case, the longer I used the previous phone the more I'm willing to put in the next if it's an improvement and my experiences with the previous phone apply to the next one (so iPhone -> iPhone applies, iPhone -> something else would not).

It also depends on what my financial situation is at the time. There's a lot more to life than phones, after all.

So really, impossible to put a number on it especially since I'm not in the market for a new phone now.

I'm not seeing the leaps in ABILITY that require me to spend $1000+ on a smartphone every year. Yeah, they get nicer screens, and faster processors, but a phone from 5 years ago does everything that phones today do (minus the fingerprint scanner, I guess).
I'm willing to pay for a new killer feature, but not a spec bump.

I guess I never really saw a huge jump in ability ever, but incremental improvements (speed, core technologies, security, privacy) to a sound platform over time. For me, a new OLED screen/ProMotion and Face ID is enough, for others it won't be. I am not sure what people expect, but I would instead focus on the overall experience of using the product, what value it brings to your day to day life, and evaluate what that value means in their currency.
