That sounds like exactly the upgrade I need!

I haven't used Swappa. How is it?
It has worked fantastic for me. It's like an eBay without the BS. That said, you have to acknowledge the user in question from which you are buying the tablet/laptop/phone. I don't make a deal with people without any ratings--even when that is the best deal. So it's what you can tolerate in terms of risk.

Realistically I think:

M1 Air is for most people with casual uses,

M2 Air if you're after a new design and don't mind spending more,

and M1 Pro or up 14/16 MBP if wanting a better screen and speakers, and ram/SSD.

Of course there can be some other delineation but that seems like probably how most people sort out the options in their head.

...Still can't help but feel like M1 Air is gobbling up (cannibalizing) higher end models for most normies, because it scratches the itch at an insane price. It's regularly $800 or less for the base model, that is bonkers value IMO. And it's not like M2 or M1 Pro for casual uses is making M1 feel slow by any stretch (especially coupled with the NAND situation on M2 Airs and now M2 Pro 14 and I believe 16" as well)
I agree. I don't think we will every see the increase in every single measurable there is from the last intel MBA to the M1 MBA. It is simply unimaginable at this point. No fans, no problem. Incredible battery life. And the performance beat virtually every laptop processor at the time of its release.

I sometimes wonder if they didn't wish they nerfed it some and made the upgrade more palatable to the M2. Either way the M1 is a beast.

I use the base M1 MBA for portability so it depends when the battery breaks. I'll look at the cost to upgrade battery at that point. But while the battery is still functional and macOS still supports the M1 chip then I think I'll keep using it indefinitely.

I voted for 'till it breaks', but after the nightmare of my last MacBook Air's RAM failure and the failure of my TimeMachine backup, probably 5 years is enough for me. I think the form factor is far superior to the M2 Air, but I would appreciate more RAM, louder speakers, USB ports on both sides, a MagSafe port, the ability to run two external monitors simultaneously, a larger screen, etc.

Edit: I'd also like a Mac without an offensively small SSD as standard.

Don't really use it for anything fancy, don't use it that often. So I suppose 'till it breaks. My iPad Air (2020) is going the same way. These are pretty worry-free products. State of tech is great right now.

I am using 3 MacBooks at the same time again, so my M1 will last until i do

The Air2020 is hand braking
The Pro 12 just took over my macMini's due to the fans replacement went sour, so that is in a box now
and the MacBook Air 2010 needs some CS4 work and typing this message.

and I was offered a MacBook 12, 2015 nice battery for a great price!
do i need a 4th?
not like i have 4 bicycles or 4 different beers in the fridge.

As long as my wife's does what she needs, there's no reason to replace it. 3–6 more years, I bet.

OTOH, I was going to get one for myself but I saw that the M2 Airs have MagSafe power connectors and that's the plus I need. Otherwise, there's nothing the M2 would do for me that the M1 couldn't.

My base M1 works fine for my use. It lives in the recording closet and runs Audition. Since it is fanless there are no concerns about fan noise screwing up a recording. I imagine the M1 Air will be in there until it dies.
