How much longer will the 5,1 (2010) run the latest OS?

I don’t think I’d call the 6,1 a failure. I’d say it’s simply another distinctly niche design that Jonny Ive was given the go ahead for, which customers just didn’t get.

Apple held a press conference to apologize for it, and admitted a thermal constraint design flaw. That's extraordinarily unusual for a company to do. On the Mac Pro's announcement it was intended to be the Mac Pro form for the next 10 years, but instead it will be the only model of its type. It is subject to a GPU recall campaign. The FX team for Deadpool said this about the 6,1:

The #Deadpool production burned through 10 Mac Pro "trash cans", which routinely failed and had to be rotated out regularly.

In the Mac Pro forum, about 50% of respondents in a poll said it was a failure. And that poll was held before any of the above problems were known.

I don't think it's just a matter of customers not "getting it".

That’s interesting feedback. I like the design for what it is. I’m sure that when the new design arrives, the market value of the 2nd hand 6,1 units will drop accordingly and I’ll be happy to buy one by that stage. I don’t think I’d ever buy a new pro machine (again). The cost is much too high for the average “at home” Power-user.

No, it wasn't a failure as it will be the first iTrashCab :)
