My iMac specifications say that my memory limit is 4GB. Would that be true? If I use more memory than that won't my motherboard recognise it?

Behind you
it would be easier if you gave us your macs model number
but if apple says so, probably. there have been a few cases where you could use m ore then apple specified, like the current Mac Pros

If it's the one in your sig, I think it's this model which officially supported only 4GB but actually worked with up to 6GB. There was a later 2.66GHz model that supported 8GB but I think that is a different model than you have.
