It’s been like this every year and they’re doing just fine.

People who want it will wait for it per usual. It’s been like this for over a decade.

Consumers don’t care, you’re right, they’ll wait until the device is available. You do have those ‘hard-core techies’ that will clamor to have the newest iPhone as soon as possible. But even my carriers around me right now, don’t have any shortages, but my local Apple stores (3 to be exact) are showing various stock shortages midnight Green surprisingly.

I spent several years and several generations of iPhones waiting in line outside the store/outside the mall in the wee hours of the morn, and even one time spending the entire night inside the mall. One year I tried preordering and that was frustrating trying to get through, although I did, and as result had to wait several weeks to actually get the device. A friend who had also preordered had her new iPhone lost in shipment and that was an even worse experience for her. So much for the preordering deal.... Now, the older I've gotten, I find that yes, I can wait a couple or few weeks and THEN get the new phone, it's not that big of a deal, and I really do prefer being able to get it right at the local Apple retail store when it is available in stock. Today's experience was very pleasant.

Have never nor will ever wait in Apple long lines to purchase a phone or any device for that matter. I usually buy when there is stock available in stores usually in the November time frame. I’m not keen on preordering either because then I worry about it being lost in shipment or something. No, I just patiently wait until I can get what I want in a local store or with my carrier (no local Apple store here).

Go to an Apple store, don't waste time going to a carrier store.... I checked this morning on Apple's website and saw that they had just what I wanted available for pickup today. Drove over to the store, made a reservation (which is still the system for the time being) and a couple of hours later after browsing around the mall returned to the Apple store to wait very briefly in line and then was able to get my new iPhone 11 Pro Midnight Green plus Forest Green case and AppleCare. I did a trade-in of my iPhone X and paid for everything. Done. . I got the new iPhone set up before leaving the store. Smooth and easy..... This was the earliest I've ever been able to get a new iPhone after Launch Day -- in the past it has been in November or late October. Really a surprise this time!

Yeah, dont waster your time with a carrier. One of the guys I work with was able to find one at a local able store this morning and we picked it up during our lunch break. Check in the morning and find a pick up window that works for you. The store was sold out by 2:00pm, but if you check early you should be able to find one (in a day or two). He was able to get what he wanted 256gb midnight green.

People will wait so it doesnt hurt apple. The problem is for the carriers. If Carrier A is out but B has it in stock people will sometimes switch.

It is bad customer service though to make people wait. But, as a business it makes no sense to have a million people making phones for launch day and then fire them all after as you dont need as much production.

Maybe switch to verizon. They have plenty available that will ship the next 1 to 2 weeks, depending on model and size.
Mine from Verizon was supposed to be shipped yesterday. Even ups sent me tracking information saying I would get it yesterday. I didn't. I called Verizon and they said the iPhone 11 Pro Max is on backorder. I told her about ups info. She looked it up. Said I'd probably get it in a few days. Now this morning ups is saying information unavailable. 🙁

Apple does not use their money so they get a credit card number when you order a new phone and as soon as it's made it's shipped and your card gets billed. Same for BB, verizon etc. Never using their money to have them made in advance.

Apple has the financing down to make the most profit per iPhone that's including manufacturing etc. Maybe not all iPhones are paid for before being manufactured but I bet most are.
