I’ve had my Series 3 about two weeks now and it’s been a nice upgrade over my original Apple Watch, but I don’t remember having any play where the sport band connects to the watch on my old one. My Series 3 has a wiggle, though it clicks in solid.
How much play is tolerable where the sport band connects to the watch? And, for those of you that have more than one Apple branded sport band, does the amount of movement vary between bands?

I have Apple OEM Sport and third parties bands, they all have some slight play to them in the band port. I do check to make sure they are seated properly in the port in place with a click.

If I were to buy a band with metal lugs, like a leather band, should I expect a better fit with no play? Also, can you recommend a good brand that makes reliable sport bands?

My leather loop from Apple also has some slight play to it, so it may not depend on the band, just overall how it's designed. I own quite a few bands and they all seem to have some slight play to it.

My Best suggestion for finding reliable sport bands, is going to Amazon and there are multiple vendors that sell a multitude of colors. They may not be the same quality and fit as Apples, but for the price point, they serve their purpose. I would just suggest reading reviews and finding what you like that suits your style best.

Just wanted to post an update. I contacted AppleCare about the wiggle my band was giving me and they had me send it in on Monday. They received it Tuesday, then contacted me and told me it was being replaced. I got my new watch today and through it does have a little play, it's nothing like the one I sent in. The play on this one is on par with the Series 1 I had before and I feel much better about this one. Apple does an incredible job of making sure we are happy with our products. Thanks to everyone that commented.

And that's a really difficult scenario for others to assess on a tech forum what's tolerable for play with the band port. But fortunately you sent it in to Apple to have them inspect it and they decided to replace your Watch altogether. Which is a good thing, that way you wouldn't have to take the risk if the band falling off the Watch when wearing it.
