I am going to start editing 1080p videos using Final Cut pro X. I don't think i need 16gb of ram to do that so i was wondering how much do i need and where i can buy it at?
    Also i have a 21.5" iMac 2.5 Ghz intel i5 quad core.

8 GB should be enough, but as 16 GB RAM costs around 80 USD via Newegg (if you are US bound), why not get 16 GB?
And if you only buy 8 GB, you will have 12 GB RAM, as you can use the already present 4 GB RAM.

4GB will be fine, but I upgraded to 16GB since it's so cheap (and I run a lot of Virtual Machines).

You probably don't need 16GB, but you will need more than 4GB, since a 8GB kit from Crucial and other companies is under $45(US), I recommend buying that and you would be at 12GB.

If by chance, 12GB is not enough, you could always replace the original 4GB of memory later with another 8GB kit. If you do replace the original Apple memory, hold on to it as sometimes Apple wants the original memory for warranty/AppleCare service.
