Complexity. iPhone OS 1 didn't even have an App Store. When we did eventually get apps, most of them were just websites in a wrapper. The phone had only one spectrum of Wi-Fi to deal with and only one carrier to deal with. It didn't have GPS. The screens were much smaller and non-Retina, so there were far less pixels to drive. It didn't have copy/paste. No MMS either. No biometrics. No selfie cam. Not even a second camera lens. Just a much simpler device.

Liquid Glass is the newest complexity. And Apple Intelligence before that. And so on...

To be the everything computer in your pocket, it needs more resources. In a couple years it will have 16 GB, then in a few more... 24? 32?

No way.
Apple sticks at least two years with the same amount of RAM in their Pro models (i.e. 15P & 16P had 8GB), sometimes even three years like with the 12P, 13P and 14P having 6GB.
What apple used to do in the past is of little relevance, as AI models did not exist in the past and having more ram determines how large (and hence how good) models one can run locally. If Apple doesn’t increase the ram quickly it will be forced to process lost stuff remotely worsening user experience.

I suspect the current ram shortages and high ram prices will mean the 18 series will have the same amount of ram as the 17 series (maybe the base 18 gets a boost up to 12 GB, but that's about it).

With the way RAM prices are heading up across the board, as all the blank silicon wafers are all purchased for years to come for AI, I think the phone may well become unaffordable if it has more than 8GB, and even then it will carry a hefty price jump.

Won't be MR without it a joke: Removing LG and AI and shipping with 18 may well be the only way possible to even fit the base OS in.

I’m on 13 pro max with 6gb (ios 18) & have absolutely zero performance issues. Like 95% of ios users i just have social media, comms, media viewing & some productivity apps

What exactly is the point of all this ram?

My OPPO Find X9 Pro comes with 16GB of memory by default.

It is astounding that Apple cannot put 16GB in a premier phone.

edit:: wrong word
Not to mention that the OPPO Find X9 is an excellent phone. Fast, reliable, beautiful display and a keyboard far better that iOS.

I know, I have owned a few Oppo models, currently own a Find X9 Pro and it’s terrific.

If Scam Altman continues to buy up RAM and thus lower the global supply, personal computer and smartphone makers might either raise prices or limit the amount of RAM, or both.
Or they could launch efforts (which have already begun) to limit the electricity available to AI data centers. Let them share in the pain.

I can see it already.

"Due to our strategic partnership with google gemini, apple intelligence will no longer be on-device but instead leverage the amazing capabilities of the cloud!
Now that it's no longer needed, phones are going back to 4/6gb of ram, we call that courage"

I bet it won’t budge from the current state of things but IF I could have a wish list and actually pay to have more ram in the iPhone I’d want 24-32.

Too much.

Apple used to force developers and themselves to not be lazy with their code. Now they are like every other Android manufacturer when it comes to RAM. It shows in the software.
The worst offender is Safari on Mac; its RAM overconsumption is egregious

Ah. More RAM in a Phoen than the baseline iMac workstation. Good work Apple.
You sure about that?

If there was any change, I would imagine them going back to DDR4 RAM to shave down the price, but upping the quantity to 16 GB to draw attention in another direction.
Hi,

This is Tim Cook and I have a CEO position available in the near future at Apple...

Makes me think 12GB will be the new minimum. If the base phones require 12GB, I wonder if the rumored low-cost MacBook will have 12GB? It would have to be a custom A18Pro or an A19 variant.
