Looking to pick up iPad pro 11" and debating which storage size to get.

My phone is 128gb because I have offline Spotify and maps/trail maps sort of stuff. And photos.

I guess with iPad I might have offline Netflix, unlikely music? Probably similar offline map usage. I'm not expecting games.

I do plan/hope to use it for photo editing including RAWs and backup when traveling BUT I plan to back up to one or more external drives. I'm not sure if I can edit a raw file off a USB/wifi drive or if they'd have to be local?

So it seems the 64gb would probably be fine, certainly 128 or 256... But I guess I might be missing things or potential opportunities.

What does the large storage options typically get used for? My laptop is 1TB but has a lot more local stuff including junk probably just sitting around taking up space.

If you are good with streaming 64gb isn’t an issue especially if you have a larger gb iPhone to complement the smaller storage iPad. I’m fine with 64gb iPad Pro but I wouldn’t want a 64gb iPhone. I went 256gb on mine and still haven’t filled it up.

Based on what I have read I think that the RAW files have to be stored locally.

I assume you are talking than for 2018 11 inch because as far as I know there is no 64 GB for the 2020 model. They start from 128 GB.

My regular 2018 6th gen iPad has 128 GB and I have used 80 GB of them. To be honest it is mostly photos/videos, Swift playground files, ebooks. I like to do videos with photos I have taken when I have visited some place and for me to do this I have to have those photos stored somewhere. I usually Airdrop them from my iPhone.

However I do not use cloud storage that much. I do not want to be tied to good internet connection. This is not always the case and I do not want to risk it. I also prefer to stream videos offline (when possible) because background multitasking and iPadOS do not go together. And I do not always watch a movie at once. Sometimes I get interrupted and this sometimes lead to reloading and this in turns means double data traffic. No thanks.

Do you backup your phone to the cloud or to your device? If you backup to your computer then your 128GB phone may consume a large portion of your diskspace.

I currently have a 512 GB iPad Pro 2017, I fill up the storage pretty fast with my iTunes library, also if your going to use LumaFusion that also eats up storage for footage. I also have Procreate and Pixelmator Pro for photo editing.

If you are going to be using it for RAW files then you might want to get more storage as RAW files tend to be bigger.

Personally, I stream the hell out of everything

I have been using the 2017 IPP 64GB version and I have filled about half of the storage. Two reasons for that, namely, I use cloud storage extensively and I don’t store music or pics on my ipad. That said when I upgrade next, I will probably be forced to get the 128GB version as that is probably going to be the iPad based line going forward. My phone though is a 128 GB device (which when i upgrade I may move to the 256 GB version). I do store music on my phone though, which is why I would get a higher capacity device.

As such, I am fine with 64GB on my iPad.

128GB would work fine for me. 128GB would also seemingly work fine for you.

128GB is more than enough for me. Don’t see no reason to store films on the iPad when can watch them at any time instead of downloading them

Get as much as you can afford. I got the 64gb and whilst it’s enough for general use, you can’t edits raws from a drive. I regret not plumping for the tb model to be honest. But 256 would at least allow you to have all your normal stuff on it, and have space to offload a shoot, cull and edit, then put back on your external.
i use mine in conjunction with lightroom classic on my Mac - with 64gb it’s perfectly possible for editing previews and syncing back to the raw in classic. Another way would be getting a tb lightroom cc package from adobe which keeps the raws in the cloud and let’s you edit smart previews. Other than that you’ll need Some room for the raws for sure.

My last 2 iPads (10.5 Pro and 11" 2018 Pro) I went with 256gb in both (my iPhone X is also 256gb). I generally don't ever go above 150gb, with the bulk of that being my digital comics collection on Comixology (~100gb), which I always like having with me.

My iPad Pro is generally a media consumption device (and some light work, marking up pdfs, etc.), so it's nice to be able to save down Netflix videos for travel, etc. and not ever have to worry about storage. For people with general use cases (eg. no particular apps / work that require large files), I think 64gb can get tight, 128gb generally fine for most people. 256gb you'll never have to worry about it in years. 512gb / 1TB only for people with particular needs.

If you're thinking about an iPP 11", IMO it's worth extra cost of getting at least 128gb or 256gb if you can afford it for future proofing. Based on your use case, anything higher is likely overkill.

I can get by with 128GB on my iPhone but on the iPad, I need more for comics and manga. Around 512GB is sufficient for my manga and comic favorites as well as a sizeable reading list (albeit doesn't really leave room for videos).

According to Comixology, I've got 2,600+ books. Majority of those are collected editions, a good number of which are 600MB-1GB omnibus. When I get a 1TB iPad, it would be interesting to see how much of my Comixology collection would fit. Complete manga collection occupies 2TB on the NAS so that's a no-go.

do yourself a favor and get yourself the entry level 2020 one, you'll not only have 128GB of storage but also 6GB of RAM, it's a better device...

Same thoughts here. And I’ll personally get even more storage than that but that’s really up to everyone.

I just picked up a 2018 refurb 64gb 12.9 iPad Pro.

I waffled as that seems like really low “in my gut”. I ultimately decided the cost savings was worth it as I will be using it mainly for Media consumption and internet browsing.

Basically I’ll just have to change my usage habits - which I realized consist mainly of how many local movies or tv shows I can store. Still space to store a few, just not as many. I also notice that when traveling I’d load like 10 movies and end up only watching 1 or 2 max.

That being said, 128 would have made me feel better...

Just take a thumb drive and watch them from there..

I have a 64GIG iPhone which is mainly for photo and apps, use the iPad Pro for media consumption :) 256 Gigs :p Compliments each other nicely for what I use it for.

I tried 64GB, turns out that it was getting full quite often, so I went with 128GB this time round.

I have a 256gb iPhone and 64gb iPad Air. I still have 223gb on my iPhone and 39gb on my iPad. But my issue is I have so many different devices that are none Apple as well, but I want the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 base model. Love my iPad Air but I want that big screen.

256GB on mine, so I don't have to worry about running out of space anytime soon. Normally I need about 50-60GB (mainly music library), but when I travel I tend to put all the photos and videos on the iPP and I download movies and series to watch, which means I need that extra space.

You can probably get away with 64GB, but it depends on how long you intend to use the iPad for - especially considering that apps are getting larger in size as well.
