If you have the money get the 128gb unit as you can not add more later. It will also increase the resale value some so you will get some of it back.
It'll increase the value but return on investment is like $10-30 for every add'l $100 spent. You still lose a lot more money by going with higher capacity. That said, if you need/want 128GB then by all means go for it.

If you are willing to spend for a 64GB model then its foolish not to get 128GB for $100 more unless:

You'll be selling it for the ipad 6.

Im not a heavy app user. I download apps from time to time when on sale or free (no fremium) or if a nice game like xcom shows up.

I have a 64gb model and have deleted a lot of games and apps but still it runs up. New nice games take up 1,5 to 3,5 gb and my 64gb are easily used up.

I have no movies or music on device and about 5 gb pics. And 10gigs left.

I say go for 128gb... As one said some RAW file pictures, some 1080p yify movies and 128gb will be used up fast also.

128gb is also the most sold version... I would get an 256gb if the option was there.

I tend to find that the $100 for each double in storage size does not help resale value that much. Maybe that is just my experience.

I buy each device with 32GB. I use about 8 GB. I am sure that I could easily get by with the 16GB models. All my music is on iTunes Match - I'm not an audiophile and lossless tracks aren't important to me - I use the apple EarPods if that's any indication. My pictures are frequently downloaded to iPhoto. I'm not a gamer. I get the 32GB models "just in case," but I know the 16 would be more than enough for me. I really should start buying the 16Gb models because the 32's certainly haven't brought me an extra $100 in resale value.

It all depends on what your usage will be. Asking how much storage to get for an ipad is a classic YMMV situation. Only you can make the decision.

This is my situation as well. I just downgraded from 32GB on my phone to 16GB and honestly haven't even noticed. The only thing I will have to do is move my pictures over to the computer sooner. Or sign up for cloud service I dunno.

I am thinking about doing the same thing with my iPad. If I took off all of the movies I loaded to it but never watched, games I downloaded and played once, music I downloaded to it but have never listened to...I think I could easily get it down below the 12 GB of available space they say is on the 16 GB. I am still undecided though...

For the uninitiated, can someone explain why the iPad eats up more compared to the iPhone (size of the device, iOS & apps?) and why with each iPad storage step up, you lose more initial gb's available?

I'm not 100% sure but I think when you increase storage capacity, the system needs to use more storage capacity in order to manage that storage if that makes sense. It is pretty universal though. USB flash drives, hard disks etc all have the same thing happen to them where the bigger the capacity, the more unavailable space you have.

If you plan on putting a lot of movies and TV shows on it, you need 128gb.

If you just have a few movies & lots of music, go for 64.

No movies, some music & lots of apps, 32gb

Just apps & books? You can probably squeak by with 16gb.

Great assessment. I have no movies and lots of apps and I went with 32gb. :)

Increase in overhead isn't really that big. Perhaps the disparity is due to decimal to binary conversion? At least based on IDEMA, 1GB = 10^9 or 1,000,000,000 bytes. However, most operating systems use binary so 1GB (GiB) = 2^30 or 1,073,741,824 bytes. I thought Apple used 1GB = 10^9 but perhaps not...

Oddly, that does make sense. I hadn't realized flash drives, etc., did the same thing. Silly me. But thanks for taking the time to offer your take & insight. I guess the part that slightly bites, is $100 doesn't really get you double the storage. If you can afford it though, I do think it's still a good deal for peace of mind. Especially when you review those gigabyte comparisons showing how the cost of each gig goes incrementally down with each higher step in storage.

It's always subjective, just like storage for an iPhone. I know what my usage is, and it doesn't make any sense to spend more on something you know will be useless to you.

When I jumped from the 64 GB to the 128 GB model, I must admit it has been nice. I was able to load a few very large games back on the iPad I forgot I had because I was running out of space to run them. Well worth the $100 jump.

I will never make the mistake of buying a device without the maximum amount of storage. Just picked up a 128 gig air. Might return it for a 128 gig retina mini...we'll see.

I have all my music on the cloud with itunes match. So all I need is a 16GB model. Cheaper to pay $25 a year for itunes match than to pay $100 more for a 32GB model. I can stream all my movies from my computer to my ipad via wifi at home with Sharing turned on in itunes. Plus, I get to stream plenty of tv and movies through Amazon prime. Even with all my apps, I still have 10GB free on my 16GB ipad. I also uploaded all my music for free with google music player, and when they come out with the app soon, I will be able to stream all of my music for free, and I will drop itunes match.

definitely not 16. u actually start out with 12. after ilife and iWork your at 5gb !!!

download asphalt 8 and dead trigger 2 like any normal human would and ur down to 3gb !!!!

GG apple

Not during the holidays. Check your receipt.

I bought an iPad Air on Tuesday, November 5th. My receipt says, "If you are not fully satisfied with your iPad purchase, you can return your undamaged iPad within 14 days of purchase for a full refund with no restocking fee"

Yes, it let me put 70GB of mature only movies and 40GB of porn on my iPad.

Okay, actually I have like 4 season of Breaking Bad only mine (catching up on the episodes), and only 35GB of porn.

Get some help man.

Not necessarily. My library of movies and TV shows exceeds half a terabyte. I use the app air video to have all my videos played over my network. And my 16 GB iPad leaves me enough room for half a dozen movies or a bunch of TV shows for watching it on the go.

I'm just really against Apple's pricing policy with their storage. I take advantage of the cloud and streaming and make do.

I believe you cannot "add anything later" to an iPad? Cellular radio, storage and color options are all built in and locked forever. But you may add cases, covers or accessories of course :D

The 128GB obviously holds the highest resale value later but if you want to get another 128GB for next gen iPad you'll also need to spend more so it's a moot point.

If anything, Apple should kill the 16GB and up the game with 32GB/64GB/128GB replacing 16GB/32GB/64GB at the same price point, respectively.
