I ordered 256GB storage space but I only have around 157GB of space left according to my MacBook air

I will be getting rid of the MacBook Air and only have the iMac. debating now if I should cancel the order and get 512GB of space.

Depends on how much more space you think you'll need. 100GB used of 256 is not bad. But unless you use for light use the space will run out soon. I'm getting 512

I will be using this computer for everyday tasks and work.
157GB is a lot of WP documents, emails and spreadsheets. Unless “everyday tasks and work” includes video editing, audio production, raw photo editing, keeping multiple large games installed etc. you should be OK and, since it is a desktop, adding an external drive, network-attached storage etc. is no big deal. Actually, with a sealed unit like the iMac where the internal storage dies with the computer, it’s not a bad idea having your personal files on external storage.

OK, it is 2021 and Apple really shouldn’t be making 512GB or more of internal storage an indulgent luxury (even fast PCIe SSD doesn’t cost that much) but 256GB is adequate for general “personal productivity” use.

Got the base 256GB M1 iMac and using only 40%.
Bulk of my stuff sits in 3 remote locations:
  • Unlimited Google Drive space
  • VPN NAS server (auto backups + local WAN storage)
  • Apple iCloud
I always leave at least 20% storage open.

All my devices have never reached close to full....

This is a very good question I am mulling over atm aside from the colour choice 🙃 . So basically i have no plans to re-sell in the near future but would just shove it back in the box as a collectible. My usage is mainly for academics and general stuff, I also have the M1 iPad Pro 128GB as a secondary device.

What would you suggest?

Mine is 512, because I plan on using external storage for anything of great size - particularly if speed of access is not all that essential.

I ended up ordering 512GB but it doesn't deliver till July 2 - 12
going to be a long wait but probably worth it in the end

It's even better so we can see what they'll present at WWDC21

the delivery date moved up to June 25 now
I doubt we will see any hardware at WWDC21 related to the new iMac.

I wanted to order mine with 1TB but the dates got pushed back like a month when I had it spec'd with 1TB so I went with 512gb. This iMac is my daily driver and I shouldn't really need to much space. If I do I can always get an external drive or use my gaming rig.

I got 1TB. I use my iMac as a depository for all documents and my MBA is a satellite device. The iMac will be like a server for me. Delivery is scheduled for June 1 - June 8 but I'm still in the "processing" stage.

Well for the price of the 512 to 1TB upgrade I can just buy a RAID 2TB NAS at home, much better for back up and moving there bigger work files / photo for all of my computers

Did you also get the base 8gb Ram?

Bought the 256gb model. My MBP has 128gb so having double the space feels like a luxury if I’m honest. I’ve got around 185gb worth of space left.

Yes, 8GB base model.

I am finding just like the M1 Mini that I have had for 6 months - the iMac with 8GB Unified Memory runs circles around the Intel counterparts like it has over 64GB of RAM !

Can't believe how cool these M1 machines are compared to the heat driven, fan crazy Intels...

1TB. I had to meticulously manage and keep track of the storage used on my 512GB MBP and eventually had to delete my Windows partition to keep some free space. Now I don't need to worry about a Windows partition obviously, but my local music and photo libraries combined are something like ~400GB. Need some extra headroom on top of that.

Never had the higher end intel ones. On my MBP I’ve got 8gb ram but once the new max comes out, I’ll be upgrading that to 16gb which I assume will be the minimum.

But from what I’ve been using so far, haven’t had many issues with the 8gb ram.

interesting to see how many people went for the base 8gb ram model.

I upgraded to 1TB. I have a 16TB NAS device that I keep most of my data on but I do like to keep some files with me and this makes it so that I am not concerned with how much space I have left on the device. Peace of mind.

I got 2 TB hubby got 1 TB.

in hind sight I think I should have gotten us both 512 and bought him an external. I have all my movies, pictures, tv shows on externals.... I was just still in the mindset of bigger is better when I ordered and it's too long of a wait to return this one and replace it (and his) in a timely manner

1TB as it's a $200 difference and I use the extra space for Logic Pro sound libraries.
