How much tax on Apple.com vs AT&T

I did pre-order (yeah!) on Apple.com for 32GB and tax shows up as 64.66 which is about double of what I would expect.

So makes me think that apple is charging tax on full iphone price (~600).

How much is this for orders done through AT&T

yep by law they charge tax on full price of the phone

If you are in a state - like CA - tax is always charged on the FULL retail price - not subsidized.

It's not an Apple or ATT thing - it's the state

The tax rate depends on what state you live in... what I mean is, in California they charge you tax on the UNSUBSIDIZED rate, so every Californian will be paying tax on $699 for the 32GB ($68.15) or tax on $599 ($58.40). Most states only charge tax on the price you pay and not the unsubsidized price.

Same thing in Ma and RI.

Someone in the other thread about this noted that they didn't have to put the larger tax rate on att.com. However, if you read the fine print, it says its just an estimation and final tax information will be displayed on your shipping email.

also kep in mind...when ordering on Apple.com...the website tax is usually estimated. It often changes when the orders actually get into the order management system
