...does Apple usually have to react to certain adjustments in their product design?

Do you think they did design and configuration revisions after all the complaints on the 15'' version (no matte option, no 8gb ram) or do you believe the specs and all features of the 17'' unibody were already set in stone when the 15'' was introduced?
 
Anything is possible, but I personally doubt that Apple would have been able to offer a matte option like this simply as a result of feedback since Oct. 14th. The 17" has always been a little more high-end than the 15". I believe that the whole line was conceived this way from the start. The battery was probably what delayed the intro of the 17", if not just because Phil needed some hardware to introduce at Macworld.
