$134,000 for a small one bedroom condo in a gated community with amenities galore. Sold it 15 years later for $485,000. Turned around and bought a townhouse pre-construction where I live today.

Too much! Selling it is turning into quite an extended faff as it's just not a first time buyer house.

I bought it with two others, which is unusual and while there's been no drama in splitting it up, it is way way more difficult to sell a £300k house than a £150k house where I am even in a fast moving area, simply due to the smaller pool of buyers.

Price will vary a lot depending on location.
I live in Brussels and the prices are high considering the salary here. But the price are cheap compared to London or Paris.

In Canada. Just amazes me when I think back to the first home and how I thought it was outrageous what they were asking for homes and then worrying if I could actually afford it on my own. Luckily I rented out a room which made it affordable.

First home/ Toronto Condo: 3 Bedroom 1500 Sq. Ft. $17,000 in 1977. Same condo today just over $750,000.

Last home/ Alberta Detached: 5 Bedroom 2,700 Sq. Ft. $169,000 in 2005. Renovated to the tune of $200,000. Made it a new home with 6 Bedrooms and added additional 800 Sq. Ft. We have seen an absolute oil boom in Alberta which has made our housing prices go crazy. Just had our home appraised last year at $550,00.

So neat to read some of the post and see the difference in prices.

I have never purchased a property - I fall into the camp that just prefers renting. Even when I was growing up home ownership was something that has never really interested me. I find it much cheaper and flexible just to rent and can move around regularly and usually live in better locations than I could afford to buy. For me a home represents somewhere to store my stuff and sleep so has never taken much of a central role in my life or leisure. It's not a common approach though all my friends have homes and love improving them and selling them on for something better. Good luck to your son and his purchased though I hope he finds something he likes :)

375,000$

1,100 sq ft / san diego

married with a newborn.

$375k here gets you something pretty damn amazing. Go out of Raleigh and into Clayton area, I can get 2600 sq. ft. new build with 1 acre of land. It is seriously about location. As a So. Cal. native, I could never have bought the house I have today for what I paid. Sacrifices were made as far as family and weather go though.
