Considering the power you get for the form factor, I think the base price is pretty solid. However, BTO is where you already miss the upgrade ability factor of cMBP. A lack of upgrade ability has dual effect, in that I have buy a more expensive machine right off the bat to future proof it and that you are at the complete mercy of apple BTO ripoff prices. When Micron releases the $600 960GB SSD, the BTO options are going to be highway robbery. The 16Gb RAM upgrade is already highway robbery. That upgrade should be $60 at the most.

Hopefully by the time I retire my cMBP, not only will the base price be equal to the cMBP now, but also the BTO options.

Hoping Apple does some changes (16GB standard ram, or at least cheaper prices) for Haswell update this June/July.

Modified question:

If the Retina 13 was 1400 and the 15 was 1500, would most of you spring the extra 100 to sacrifice the portability?

Not true at all. For me size is very important. If given the choice I would choose a 13" over a 15" even if the 15" was cheaper.

I would be hard pressed to hand in over $2K for any computer even one as lovely as the 15" rMBP. My route to owning one would be through Apple refurbished program or to find a lightly used ( and well taken care of) unit. Which is what I did and bought- a base unit with 16GB of RAM (6 months old in mint condition- previous owner an Apple Store manager). For that I paid $1800 (CDN).

Had I bought it new with the RAM upgrade and the 13% Sales Tax, the total would've been $2711- totally not worth it.

Haha long thread title but that's the question.

How much would the base 15 retina pro have to be for you guys to buy it. I know the general consensus for the 13 retina pro was that 1500 was too much for the specs you get. How much would the 15 have to be for you guys to say "wow that's a great deal. I'm gonna buy it"?

1600? 1700? (Those numbers include tax)

How about including better specs and charging more? Not everyone cares about low price. The rMBP is a bargain by far. Period.

Talking price is the one aspect of Apple products that's a total waste of time.

So ultra thin & light, I prefer my 15" MBPr over the 13" even though I bought both. Between extensive work & personal use, it's worth it to have choices.

Yet I carry the 15" with me nearly everyday unless I'm headed to the airport, or just want a change.

Currently the retina commands a price premium of 300 € (13") or 400 € (15"), but the comparison is not as simple, as other specs also vary (e.g. the base 13" cMBP comes with 4 GB RAM, whereas the base 13" rMBP comes with 8 GB)
I think the 13" cMBP is overpriced. If it only had the same display as the 13" Air, it would be more justifiable.

As many have noted here, a retina is not upgradeable and for those who have pointed that out, it might be an issue. Also, for 2500+ €/$ Apple needs to be able to offer me the *perfect* machine.

Call me stupid, but I'd rather have a cMBP + retina for a 400€ premium compared with the current rMBP.

RGDS,

I am using a rmbp 13 (early 2013) and I find it awesome except for a few issues at the beginning but I got a replacement and it works fine! 1499 is actually totally worth the retina display!

The problem with Apple is that they tend to be very late when it comes to updating capacity/memory specs. Even the most budget Windows PC's were 4GB RAM/500GB HDD while Apple was stuck on 2GB/250GB on MacBooks that cost 3x as much. And some would argue that its even worse now because these aren't user upgradable parts:

$1000 MBAir11 = 64GB Storage?
$1500 MBAir13 = 4GB Ram?
$2200 rMBP15 = 256GB SSD?

Sure, you can customize your machine but if dont buy straight from Apple then you're stuck with what you get (or paying 3x more for proprietary SSD options).

I got a cMBP15 last week and put in a 256GB SSD + 750GB HDD, but decided to go Retina instead. So now I'm on a 256GB SSD rMBP and thinking about the pricetag vs the storage capacity is kinda depressing. So now I dont know which to keep because both sides have compromises.

I did something similar. Had a cMBP 2012 model and then ended up buying a retina15 and selling the classic. I got a good deal on the retina and am fine with 256ssd and 8gb ram. I have to say I like the retina model much better. I got the samsung screen and I sat it next to the classic before I sold it and there is no comparison sitting side by side. I also really like the thinner and lighter more than I expected.

FYI, I don't think the 960 GB Micron will come in mSATA form factor anytime soon. Just check out the table at AnandTech. Impossible to fit that many NAND chips on the PCB apparently.

I think 480 GB is the highest we'll see for a while.

I just want dGPU to be upgraded before I spring for the 15". Probably won't happen with the Haswell bump.
