I'm thinking of starting a webshop where users will be able to buy new (sealed) factory unlocked iPhones at reasonable prices. How much are you guys willing to pay including worldwide shipping?

These are the retail prices in Europe:

    16GB 3GS - $850
    32GB 3GS - $997

would you be able to buy phones for less then retailin Europe?

I would have bought 2 instead of my locked phones them have to chase the unlocks and break the updateability but didn't want to resort to eBay. 850 would be the top of the range I'd be willng to pay.

MSRP for factory unlocked 3GS's in Hong Kong:

    $685- 16GB 3GS
    $800- 32GB 3GS

I would say some HK-based stores would be considerably cheaper (considering the 32gb in HK is cheaper than your 16gb's)

A lot of people don't want/need unlocked phones. It sure would be nice, but I don't need it.

I'd pay an extra hundred myself, since I have no real use. Of course, the market for locked phones is higher than that!

    $399 for 32GB 3GS.

i would buy a locked 3GS off of ebay or craigslist, then unlock it using blacksn0w that's coming out on the 4th :D Geohost ftw!

I think most people don't want to unlock/jailbreak their phones or just don't know how to. That's why I was thinking of starting an online shop. HK is cheap but you need a HK address if you want to order it from the Apple Store. eBay and Craigslist are good alternatives but some people just get ripped off on these sites.

Anyway, I'll be glad to hear more thoughts on this matter.

From the point of view of an owner of factory unlock (who did a lot of research before buying the device), i think $1013-1040 is a reasonable and very competitive price in Europe, Asia, and Africa. If you want to be main stream then around $1140

The highest I would pay for any of these would be the official Hong Kong prices.

    HK$ 6,288 for the 32GB 3GS. (US$ 811~)
    HK$ 5,388 for the 16GB 3GS (US$ 695~)
    HK$ 4,488 for the 8GB 3G (US$ 579~)

Anyone who would pay over $800 for the 32GB iPhone is being ripped off. You can purchase the iPhone from (at least) one of the huge Apple Premium Authorised Sellers here and they will deliver it (almost) anywhere in the world.

Correct, Ultimate adds a shipping cost of $25.45 if you ship it to the US. I tried several European countries but no luck there. They don't give any information whatsoever about shipping and their contact page is offline. Don't expect a lot of people buying from this APR.

I'd pay no more than £600 ($987.15) for an unlocked iPhone 3G S 32GB. Also I'd like to be sure that the phone had a legitimate warranty (that could be used), and that insurance is available to purchase for it (in some way or another). Just in case.
Mr. Brown, the price should include insured shipping, there's nothing more frustrating than a "lost" parcel worth hundreds of pounds.

An unlocked iPhone would be useful once in a while, data rates abroad are just extortionate. :(

Wouldn't that count as a 'use?'

He said he had no use for one. He implied that if he DID have a use he'd pay even more.

+1 for insured shipping but this will just make the order more expensive. Especially if you're not shipping stuff on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong: when I ship something, I want it to arrive at its destination safely. There's always a potential risk of lost and stolen parcels.

I'm trying to figure out the best shipping service here (FedEx/UPS/DHL) but they're all expensive when it comes to shipping overseas.

Perhaps, but by 'real use' he implied that having an unlocked iPhone wouldn't be of significant use to him on a regular basis. Thus his conclusion being he doesn't need it, but it would be nice to have the flexibility and so would pay more. Once in a while is a 'use' but not a 'real use' IMO.

    What currency are these in?

    If they're Zimbabwean dollars, I'm buying! ;)

    USD? Euro? Pound?

$900 is what I paid for mine, so that's pretty much my limit.

I do love the freedom of traveling and using local SIM cards; of course I guess that doesn't really matter since I have the AT&T unlimited international data plan.

I payed 879 AUD (~700 USD at the time) for my iPhone 3GS, which I got from the Australian Apple Store! YAY Australia! It's really great because if I ever need to go to America (or any other country for that matter) I can just swap out my SIM without worrying, and also it doesn't matter what Baseband I have because it will always be unlocked!

I think I'll limit things to European countries. Thanks everyone for your input!
