How often do new ATVs come out?

I'm considering an ATV3 (that's the current gen, right?)
I'm wondering how often they come out. They weren't in the buyer's guide, so I wasn't sure if they follow "schedules" like the other apple products.

Are most of the new features done with upgrades? Or with the new hardware releases?

Not frequently enough to put a normal release schedule together for it. I would get the Apple TV 3 now. No one really has any idea when/if they will release another one.

Wikipedia can be your best friend...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appletv#Technical_specifications

So basically the first gen ran from 2007 until mid-2010, the second gen ran mid-2010 until early 2012. My guess is that we won't see an upgraded AppleTV until next year at the earliest. This is purely speculative.

Also they sell for about as much used as new (look it up). Even if you have to take a hit of say 50% to sell it used in a few years, that's only $50. "Rent" it for 2 years or so for $99 then sell it for $50-$75 so that your net for a couple years of :apple:TV fun is only $25 to $50.

Definitely buy one now, the demand could go through the roof if they do open up an SDK for it as speculated.

the current ATV3 is a relatively new product very early in it's cycle -- we prob won't see a refresh for another 2-3 years.
