I've got Super Duper setup to do a Smart Update every night at 12 AM. Is this overkill?

in general i back up anytime i can't go forward, but sometimes i will back up even if i can go forward. just cause i'm not limited doesn't mean i can't exercise free will (even though there is no such thing).

I don't back up often. Normally just before I re-format.

I'm a bit of a back-up freak. I have SuperDuper clone my main drive every night, plus I have Mozy running in real time, plus I use .Mac's backup. I also burn my pictures to DVDs monthly and store them at work.

Other than the DVDs, it is all automatic and I never really think about it.

Assuming you are backing up to the same place every night the way you are doing it offers the most protection in case something goes wrong with your main drive. However, for error recovery purposes it might be too frequent. By the time you notice that something is missing or corrupted you may have backed up over the original. Currently, I back up once a week, and before system updates, but I am waiting for Time Machine.
